Thomas G. Alexander

Thomas G. Alexander is an American historian and academic who is the Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr. Professor of Western History Emeritus at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is the former director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies. Alexander is considered a leader of what has been called the "New Mormon History", whose practitioners approach their religious and theological history as believing scholars. His approach has influenced many younger scholars working in the field of Mormon studies including D. Michael Quinn, David J. Whittaker, Jessie L. Embry and Stephen C. Taysom. He is also the author of Utah's official statehood centennial history.

Alexander was born in Logan, Utah and raised in a working-class section of Ogden, Utah served a proselytizng mission for the LDS Church in Germany, and earned his A. A. at Weber State University, his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Utah State University in Logan, Utah and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Alexander is well known for a carefully crafted biography of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' fourth president Wilford Woodruff, which provides insight into the development of Mormonism, new religions of the nineteenth century, and the American West. He asserts that Woodruff was "...arguably the third most important figure in all of LDS Church history after Joseph Smith . . . and Brigham Young" (p. 331). While other LDS historians may disagree with the ranking, his work provides a careful study of a very important leader in the emerging Mormon faith. Woodruff was a central leader of nineteenth century Mormonism, a member of the church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles between 1835 and 1889, and president of the church from 1889 until his death in 1898 at age 91.
