Thomas Charles Hope

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1795, Joseph Black selected Thomas Charles Hope (1766-1844) as his assistant and eventual successor to the professorship of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. Hope’s goal was to more fully combine the practice of medicine with his chemical instruction. Within a few years his aims began to be realized as medical students British and foreign crowded his lectures.

Hope discovered the chemical element Strontium and named it after the Scottish town where it was found. In the experiment that bears his name Hope determined the maximum density of water and explained why icebergs float.
