Project news

• An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page.
• The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain.
• Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created.
• An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway.
• The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.

Current proposals

• Proposed guidelines for categories of military people are currently being discussed. A number of issues have already been resolved, but the proposed scheme is still in draft form and further input would be very welcome.

Project news

• The various talk page banners used by the project have been consolidated into the main {{WPMILHIST}} template, which now adds extra notices based on various parameters. The older templates are currently in the process of being replaced.
• The old manually-maintained worklist has been replaced with a new system that allows article ratings to be provided directly on the associated talk pages, feeding an automatically generated list. Nearly two thousand articles have already been assessed, and many more still need a rating!
• Five new task forces have been started: Chinese military history, French military history, Memorials and cemeteries, Weaponry, and World War I.
• A new structure for the list of project members has been introduced; to save space and improve legibility, any member with no edits for at least three months will be moved to a separate list of inactive members.

Current proposals and discussions

• Discussions about categories for military people are ongoing, with a number of points regarding naming and structure still needing to be resolved. Additional input from all project members would be extremely welcome!
• Proposals have been made to develop a separate tree of date categories just for military conflicts and to adopt a different project icon.

• The coordinator election has concluded; six new Assistant Coordinators have been selected.
• Four new task forces have been created: American Civil War, Dutch military history, German military history, and Italian military history.
• A liaison group with the Biography WikiProject has been started.
• The project userboxes have been moved to subpages of the project due to the German userbox solution; plans to clean up the resulting redirects are currently underway.

Project news

• A new review process for potential A-Class articles is now operational. Much of the backlog of pre-review articles has already been processed; all project members are invited to take part in future reviews, and to nominate high-quality articles themselves.
• The automation department, which schedules bulk tasks for bot and AWB processing, is now open; all project members can request new tasks and comment on existing requests.
• The various requests for articles and images have been consolidated into the combined requests page, which now includes requests for article creation, maps and other images, translation, and article cleanup.
• Some advice for editors working on featured article candidacies is now available; further suggestions are welcome.
• A showcase of high-quality articles has been added to the project page; it includes featured and A-Class articles within the project's scope.
• The Early Modern warfare task force, covering the period from c. 1500 to c. 1792, has been created.
• A standard category scheme for military conflicts and operations is now available.

Current proposals and discussions

• Discussion continues about possible enhancements to the project award system.
• The proposed category scheme for military units and formations is nearing completion; further commments are welcome!
• A discussion about working on old featured articles with citation problems has begun.
• Several ideas for new task forces are up for debate.

• A set of five criteria for B-Class status has been introduced; new parameters are available in {{WPMILHIST}} to keep track of articles' progress with regard to these criteria.
• The implementation of the new naming convention for military units is continuing.
• The Nordic military history task force has been created.
• All task forces now have their own sets of assessment statistics, logs, and worklists available.
• {{Infobox War Faction}} has been created for use with factions participating in a war.
• A gallery of military related featured pictures has been compiled as part of the project's showcase.
• Several new category naming conventions have been introduced:
  • All categories classifying military conflicts and operations by country (such as Category:Battles by country) have been changed to use "X involving Y" in place of "X of Y". For example, Category:Battles of France is now Category:Battles involving France.
  • All categories classifying warfare by era (such as Category:Battles by era) have been changed to use "X of the Y era" in place of "Y X". For example, Category:Industrial battles is now Category:Battles of the Industrial era.

Project news

• The new consolidated review department—combining the existing project peer review and A-Class review with a listing of project articles undergoing various external featured content candidacies and reviews—is now operational.
• Two new templates have been introduced:
  • {{Infobox Firearm Cartridge}}, a primary infobox for use with firearm cartridges and artillery shells.
  • {{Command structure}}, an auxiliary infobox designed for use with {{Infobox Military Unit}}.
• An effort is being made to have task forces maintain annotated bibliographies for their topic areas; several task forces have already begun to construct them.
• The project reached two important milestones this month: 500 active members and 30,000 articles in the assessment system.
• A military version of Wikipe-tan has been created; a new userbox featuring one of the images is available for interested project members.

• The project's scope has been updated to include depictions of military history in cultural media.
• The Spanish military history task force has been created.
• The project now has a publication department, which will work on producing collections of military history articles for offline publication.
• There is now a list of military-related deletion nominations available.
• Two new sets of guidelines have been introduced:
  • Guidelines for classifying military conflicts and categorizing campaigns
  • Expanded guidelines for citation styles and requesting citations
• Two new templates are now available:
  • {{Infobox National Military}}, a primary infobox for use on articles about an entire nation's military establishment.
  • {{Service record}}, an auxiliary infobox for documenting a military unit's or ship's service history.
• The old requested articles page and the automation department have been discontinued.

• The new project award structure is nearing completion; a draft currently is up for comment.
• A proposal for replacing the project's collaboration with a contest scheme is being discussed.
• Sign-ups for several potential task forces are open; all interested members are encouraged to list themselves!
