Thizz Entertainment is a San Francisco Bay Area based, independent record label, created in the late 1990's by the late Bay Area rapper Mac Dre and close friend Curtis "Kilo Curt" Nelson. Andre Hicks, better known by his stage name Mac Dre, first gained popularity in the early 1990's and started his first record label, Romp Productions. After being charged with conspiring to commit several bank robberies (that were directly linked to Mac Dre's "Romper Room Gang"), Dre was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992. After his release in 1996, Mac Dre relocated to Sacramento and decided to change the name of his record label from "Romp" to "Thizz Entertainment", supposedly to downplay his connection with the gang that led to his incarceration. During this time, Mac Dre's local popularity steadily rose. On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot after a performance in Kansas City, Missouri. When Mac Dre died, Curtis Nelson took control over the label and remains the current owner today.

The label is known for producing "feel good music", a playful genre of hip-hop coined by Mac Dre "blending Shock G’s nasally sonic smirk with E-40’s love of language and odd vocal inflections." It is also partially responsible for the Northern California hyphy movement. The word 'thizz' has its roots in Ecstasy usage, Bay Area slang for getting high on MDMA. After Mac Dre's death, the label continued to release albums, with more than 50 released since 2004. Over sixty artists have released albums through Thizz Entertainment and it's various divisions. PSD, Messy Marv and Keak Da Sneak bring life back to Thizz Nation with an album due in the spring of 2007 on SMC Recordings.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2006 -- PSD, one of the Bay Area's favorite hip hop sons, had been by Mac Dre's side for many years. As one of the founding members of Mac Dre's Thizz Nation and before that, a member of Mac Dre's group, The Cutthroat Committee, PSD has been one of the driving forces behind the Bay Area hip hop scene for years. So it makes sense that PSD is bringing life back to Thizz Nation with an album due in the spring of 2007 on SMC Recordings.
The Thizz Nation (another word for the label) was founded by Mac Dre and most Bay Area residents credit Dre with jump-starting the Hyphy Movement. After Mac Dre's death, Thizz Ent. was thrust into the spotlight with Mac Dre's ever-growing cult following shown in some of the these projects - Treal TV 1 & 2 (a popular DVD series, which PSD played a significant role), Thizz Nation mixtapes, as well as the Atlantic Records signing of Mistah F.A.B.
The upcoming Thizz/SMC release PSD, Keak Da Sneak and Messy Marv present Da Bidness will feature beats from Droop-E (E-40's son), Rick Rock, Jake and the Phat Man, PSD, Tron Trees, DJ Ammbush and Lev. The album also features some of the top Bay Area rappers including E-40, The Thizz Nation's - Mistah F.A.B. & Dubee aka Sugawolf. The album's lead single will be "Cuz, Cuz" which is Bay Area slang equivalent to "son" in New York or "shawty" in the south. "Cuz, Cuz" features the album's all-stars - PSD, Keak Da Sneak and Messy Marv with production from Droop-E.
PSD explains his motives for putting together this amazing collaboration, "Initially the album was just me and Keak. It was supposed to be called "The Hyphy/Cool Nigga project". What me and Keak did was cool but neither of us were completely satisfied. My man gave me the idea of bringing a third cat to the table, someone from San Francisco so I hit Messy Marv. Mess got back at me, came to the studio and put it in motion. So now you have the foundation of the Bay Area on one project: San Francisco (Mess), Oakland (Keak) and Vallejo (PSD)- Three of the baddest cats wit hands, feet and the gift to gab. We reppin' all around and in between the Bay."
SMC's co-owner, Will Bronson, shows his excitement for the upcoming album, "For us being a company based in the Bay Area, this project means a hell of a lot to us . You've got Keak Da Sneak, Messy Marv & PSD on one project, the two biggest Bay Area record companies aligning themselves with each other and to top it all off- it's just a dope fucking record. The best part is, this is only the beginning with PSD and our alliance with the Thizz Movement."
Mistah Fab also has a new CD called the the Yellow Bus Rider. The hit single, Ghost Ride It has been a hit in Northern California radio stations. The music video for "Ghost Ride it" hit number one on a recent. countdown of Rap Videos on MTV.F.A.B. also hosts "Yellow Bus Radio" Friday nights from 10pm-Midnight on Wild 94.9/KYLD-FM.
[edit] Distribution
Reflective of the great changes taking place in the music industry today, this independent label is succeeding by nurturing a music scene largely ignored by the major record labels, and their promotional dollars. Thizz Entertainment stays on the pulse of trends in local hyphy hip-hop culture, releasing successful albums by many locally esteemed artists through the power of the Internet and word of mouth. They offer the benefit of corporate name recognition to artists who otherwise might not be able to successfully push a record. In exchange for a cut of the profits, Thizz lends logistical support and promotional dollars, as well as the "Mac Dre Presents" logo. As is the case with many independent labels, releasing a record with Thizz Entertainment exposes them to potential new fans through association with other popular artists on the label roster. Additionally, Thizz Entertainment sponsers parties and other promotional events.
