Thisted municipality is a Danish municipality (Danish, kommune) in Viborg County on the west coast Vendsyssel-Thy, a part of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. It is on the north bank of Limfjord. The municipality covers an area of 564 km², and has a total population of 29,133 (2005). It was Denmark's largest municipaly according to area, after the 1970 reform. Its mayor is Erik Hove Olesen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Thisted. Another town in the municipality is Vorupør.

Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Fjerritslev to the east, Hanstholm to the north, and Sydthy to the south. Neighboring island municipality Morsø to the east is separated from the municipality by the waters of Thisted Bredning to the north and Vil Strait (Vilsund) to the south.

The 382 meter long Vilsund Bridge (Vilsundbro) connects the municipality to the island of Morsø.

By January 1, 2007 Thisted municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with Hanstholm and Sydthy municipalities to form a new Thisted municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,072 km² and a total population of 46,158 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").

The municipality's economy is based upon agricultural trade. Thisted is the final stop on the northern route of the railway line from Struer.
