Thirsk and Malton will most likely be fought for the first time at the UK general election in 2009 or 2010 unless ofcourse a snap election is called earlier. Estimates of the constituency's behaviour in the 2005 general election place it as safely Conservative. On November 18, 2006, Thirsk and Malton Conservative Association unexpectedly {http://blog.appgifs.org.uk} chose Anne McIntosh (sitting MP for Vale of York) as their candidate in preference to Ryedale's sitting MP John Greenway.
