Third Hungarian Republic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Third Hungarian Republic is today's Republic of Hungary. The Republic was proclaimed on October 23, 1989, after the end of Hungary's Communist era, replacing the former system of government (People's Republic of Hungary). The date was chosen because it was the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and now it is one of Hungary's national holidays.
- The First Hungarian Republic was in 1918. It turned into a short-lived communist regime. After it, the royal state was restored, although the country did not have a king.
- The Second Hungarian Republic was transient like the first one. It existed from 1946 to 1948. The Communists seized power again, and Hungary remained a Communist state until 1989.
As a rhetorical term, Third Hungarian Republic is used frequently by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and other left-wing politicians.
A short-lived Republic of Hungary also existed during the revolution of 1849-49, but it is not counted among these.
