The island of Thimarafushi (Dhivehi: ތިމަރަފުށި), (pronounced thi-ma-ra-fu-shi) is one of the inhabited islands of the Maldives. Geographically Located in the Thaa Atoll, ( ) which is also known as the Kolhumadulu Atoll, the island has its recorded population of 2408 people as at July 2006.

The female population is relatively less compared to the population of males in the island. The number of females under 18 years of age was 422. While the age group of 18-65 was 611, the elderly members of the female society (aged above 65) were 46.
Thereby leading us to the total population of females in the island: 1079

Coming to the male section of the population of Thimarafushi, it is proved on statistics as at June 2006 that the number of boys (aging below 18) was 520. The working population (18-65) was 745, and the senior citizens (65+) figured up to 64.
Totaling the male population of the island: 1329.
According to the population chart shown below, the small island of Thimarafushi has a developing community’s population structure.
[edit] Economic Activities
Though the islanders of this beautiful island mainly depend upon the primary sector of the economic activities, they also involve in the secondary and tertiary sector as well. While fishing has become their main source of income, contract work, shipping and business has also taken its fair space from the charts of economic activities in the island. Hard working men and women rise with the sun to start their day. Working almost 24/7, the citizens of Thimarafushi have played a major role in the islands development in the last few years. And to say the least, they have made a huge impact on the development charts of the islands of Republic of Maldives.

According to the information obtained as at June 2006, it is recorded that the island has one health centre, which is owned by the government. One doctor, one nurse, one community health worker, two family health workers and five mid wives, also owned by the state. This being the case, Thimarafushi has one Pharmacist owned by the public.
Though the western medicine standards are considered poor in the island, they have their own herbologists serving the islanders. It is said, most of the islands citizens consult the herbologists for injuries and other health related matters.
The islanders travel to Thaa. Veymandoo for health matters which cannot be attended by their own health personals.

Thimarafushi might be considered as a small island by some people, but the number of vehicles sure isn’t small in accordance to its size. It has a recorded number of 164 bicycles, of which 162 are private while the remaining 2 are owned by the government. 1 pickup also owned by the government, 4 motor cycles privately owned, and 2 other vehicles which registered under private ownership.
As Maldives is famous for its surrounding sea and its bountiful treasuries under water, Thimarafushi has its own sea transport vehicles too. It owns 2 launches used for various purposes and 9 mechanized Dhoani used for fishing. Neither a single number of sailing Dhoani, Vadhu Dhoani, Bokkuraa nor Sathari Dhoani was recorded in the statistics sheets of the Maldives on June 2006. It has 3 other boats which travels bet Malé and Atolls.
[edit] Water and Sewerage
It is known that the well water quality is considered poor in this island, thus the people of Thimarafushi collects rain water for their daily consumptions. There are 39 public rain water tanks and 325 private rain water tanks located in the island.
The sewerage system in the island is not connected to the sea, hence lowering the chances of polluting the sea water surrounding the island. There are a relatively less number of houses with toilets in it. According to recorded statistics as at June 2006, the number of houses with toilets was 298. Being so, the number of houses with water pumps has rose to 171, proved with figures on statistic sheets as at June 2006.
