Vaastav: The Reality is a story of Raghunath Namdev Shivalkar who transforms from a Pav bhaji vendor to a feared underworld don. Directed by newcomer Mahesh Manjrekar, this film went on to win all the major awards in Bollywood for the year 1999.
Although one can find the story in other films like Nayakan, this one shines due to its dramatic portrayal of action sequences. It does fall short on direction quality when compared to underworld films like Satya or Company but it has one aspect that the others do not. Vaastav has Sanjay Dutt playing the protagonist. Easily his best performance to date, Dutt plays the role of a don to perfection. His awesome on-screen persona eclipses the shortcomings of the film and its no wonder that the movie has turned out to be a blockbuster. This mind-blowing performance of his is a good testimonial to his acting talent.
The success of Vaastav once again brought the Mumbai underworld into the limelight. Reportedly the movie is a biopic on Chhota Rajan. It has been widely reported that mafia bosses took a liking to this movie and even conveyed their pleasure to Manjrekar and Dutt. Mumbai police also claim to have taped telephone conversations between Chhota Shakeel, Mahesh Manjrekar and Sanjay Dutt.
Underworld invovement aside, this movie stands out as one of the best movies to come out of Bollywood.
