WP:ADOPT

Hi there,

As a user looking to Adopt with the Adopt-a-User program, there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention, as well as request help with the backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.

Also numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

So I hope you get adopting soon - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 15:23, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Category:Otogi Zoshi characters

Since your initial comments at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 January 6#Category:Otogi Zoshi characters articles have been placed in the category. Do you still think it should be deleted? (Please can you reply at the category discussion if you want to change your vote.) Timrollpickering 19:51, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Albanian Genocides. It was my fault. It's really another article the first is List of Albania Genocides and the second List of Albanian Genocides. --TheFEARgod (Ч) 15:41, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Ahah. Subtle. Still, both articles are similar I think so ought to suffer the same (hopefully swift) fate. Cheers! The Rambling Man 15:43, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

labrt2004's Edit Bootcamp

I hereby initiate giant thread! I've kind of started exploring around already, mostly looking for pages that can be speedy deleted and doing a few minor edits here and there. Also made minor contributions to a few articles. If you could look at my contributions list (Particularly the stuff I did with Ranaga8 on his talk page) and tell me whether I've been the right things so far, that would be great! Labrt2004 19:05, 14 January 2007 (UTC)labrt2004

Hey Labrt2004, I've had a quick browse at several of you last 50 or so edits. All in all I think you're doing a very good job for a new editor and would encourage you to continue to do so! One word of advice about edit summaries, it's generally very good practice to add one each time! If you go to your preferences page and head for the Editing tab, you can check a box which will require you to enter an edit summary each time. This is a really useful tool as it means you do the right thing and your fellow editors will be able to see, at a glance, what you've done and why you've done it. The Rambling Man 19:13, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice! One more question--I think I may have messed up the coding on the Harry Potter portal when I tried to add something to it and I haven't the faintest idea of how to fix it. It looks rather alarming the way it is now...Labrt2004 19:37, 14 January 2007 (UTC)labrt2004

Can you tell me exactly which edit it was that you think you've messed up? Either point me at the article you edited and the approximate time you did it, or give me a link the to the diff. A diff is something you'll see all over WP, it means a difference and basically allows editors to see what has changed from one edit of an article to the next. The easiest way of getting the diff is to head for the 'history' tab on the page you've just edited and then browse throught the various edits until you find the change you're looking for. I'll save this page and then show you the diff for it. The Rambling Man 22:19, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Okay, the diff for my last edit was this one (the hyperlink shows you the difference). To access the URL, I went to the history tab and used the 'Compare versions' functions after I'd selected the current version and the last version. This always helps determine what has changed between various edits, and I use it a lot for vandal hunting! Hope that helps, let me know if there's anything more I can do for you! The Rambling Man 22:25, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Okay, the changes I made weren't to the main page of the portal, but to the section called "websites." Here is the diff. Labrt2004 22:42, 14 January 2007 (UTC)labrt2004

I've had a look at your diff, and to be honest, I don't see a problem with it. What do you think is wrong with it? The Rambling Man 11:16, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

The problem is the layout of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_potter_portal. It shouldn't look like that! It used to look a lot more symmetrical, and now everything is just squeezed off to the left side. I've looked at it with the only two browsers I own right now and it looks messed up on both, so I'm assuming it's not an artifact of the browser type. Here is a screenshot of what I see in case it doesn't match what you see. My changes don't appear in the history of the page itself. They only appear in the page about websites, which is a module in that portal. So you would think that my changes wouldn't affect the layout of the portal, but the thing is, it started looking weird the minute I posted my changes. But even if the layout problems aren't related to my changes, I'd still like to fix them! I'm surprised somebody else hasn't noticed them yet! Thanks for your help and patience! Adoption

Hello Rambling Man, I saw your offer and to adopt me, and I accept. I have a few questions: 1. How does one place and image in a article and how do you align to the left, right, or center? 2. How do I show you code without it making things? I mean in your page you have code for a table of user boxes, at the beginning the code describes "style="float: right; margin-right: 1em; margin-bottom: 0.5em; width: 250px; border: #000000 solid 1px" do you have to memorize correct width etc.? 3. Why is that different from using "Userboxtop?" 4. Why do you have td and tr in the code for your table what do they do? 5. Lastly where am I supposed to ask you questions. If any of the questions are poorly worded just say and I will try to reword.

Thanks

Aidepikiwym 21:03, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello Aidepkiwym, thanks for your reply. Some responses to your questions, although they are brief right now, I'm just about to go to bed!
  1. For placing images, I would suggest reading this page. It's pretty straightforward Wiki markup. My other advice would be to flagrantly copy other images that you see, if you like the way they're displayed!
  2. Showing wiki code without it being implemented is easy, using blah blah notation. So anything you put between the <>'s will not be implemented as wiki markup.
  3. Using "Userboxtop" is the way forward because it means you don't have to have a degree in wiki markup. Like I said, copying other pages you've seen is the best form of flattery, and it saves time and effort too!
  4. td & tr are HTML elements for tables. Check out the HTML pages for further information, or the WP:MOS for details of the Manual of Style for Wikipedia.
  5. Ask me questions here on my talk page. That way I get alerted to your query. I will respond here too, so make sure you watch my talk page so that you know when I reply!
Hope that helps and makes sense. Feel free to ask more as and when you need it! The Rambling Man 22:10, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

User:CupOBeans

Hi - I noticed you contributed to Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Cup_of_beans. I was the editor who nominated it for speedy originally, and I've spent the evening worrying quietly about the page's author (User:CupOBeans). The account's only been used to create (and argue about) Cup of beans, but for a user who's only been using Wikipedia for a few hours, CupOBeans seems incredibly familiar with wiki markup, policy, the nature of consensus on WP and so forth. I'm loath to call someone a sock without any evidence other than a vague disquiet (and with no idea who the puppetmaster might be) - would you mind having a look at his/her edits and letting me know if I'm just being daft? --Squeezeweaseltalk 22:57, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

conflicting information

hello budgiekiller,
i'm currently editing Malaysia at the 1958 Asian Games and i found out that information (online) is conflicting between the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Malaysian Olympic website. The former states that Malaysia garnered only 2 bronze medals while the malaysian website says they won 3. which should i consider correct? i'm not sure if you can answer this question, but currently, the Asian Games articles adheres to the OCA website information. thanks and more power. --RebSkii 17:58, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

What to do in instances like this?? An IP address. They're talking about a change made almost a month ago, surely by someone else using the same computer. They are freaking out and slapping profanity all over their user page. But it seems kind of futile to explain how everything works, since it's an IP address. Labrt2004 21:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah. Given that I've probably warned in excess of 3,000 anon IPs for edits, this hardly comes as a surprise! The way I deal with it is by being polite! It's the only way. Hope the Harry Potter portal edits were to your liking! Cheers! The Rambling Man 22:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

I would like to thank you for helping the Wikipedia community determine if I should become a sysop by voting oppose on my second RFA. Four captains

Hi there. Congrats on the narrow victory last night. I've been bonkers busy last few days, so my WP contributions have been more trivial. I'd like to refocus on this article as soon as I have time. Your edits have been brilliant. Is there guidance on the match scoreboxes, or can one do as one likes? Re the name, I think it's time for the article to be moved. We can always move it back if one of us tracks down a decent source or two. The focus will have to be slightly rejigged to accommodate the change and presumably, we'll need a separate section in the article dealing with the nomenclature, and encompassing the current Trivia section. I guess we can use WP:CRIC to help us find the right convention for the new name... I'll post to WT:CRIC now. --Dweller 10:35, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

OK, I've made the move, per WT:CRIC. However, a new headache occurs, which is that the article is heavily one-sided now, given the new name. Ho hum. --Dweller 11:07, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
That's okay, we'll need to rework it a bit to add some Windies stuff, but it shouldn't be a big issue... The Rambling Man 11:23, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm chasing photos. I've asked for help at WT:CRIC. I have not the first jot of understanding about photo uploading, fair use etc, but I think you do. Reckon we can purloin get any decent (and usable) mug shots of the principal characters using our friend Google? --Dweller 19:43, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Question

Hello again, I was wondering where do you find sources for articles? Is it just a Google search?

Aidepikiwym 00:56, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Another couple, 1. How do you find images to upload if you wanted to add them to an article? I mean I know how to find picture but how can you tell if it's ok to use, as in not copyrighted? 2. How do you join a "WikiProject?" Are there any qualifications you must have?

Aidepikiwym 22:50, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Harry Potter Fan fiction

I think I may have run into my first instance where I strongly disagree with another editor, though I've not acted on my unhappiness yet. The user Fbv65edel was "bold" (I actually quite detest this term) and obliterated the entire article "Harry Potter fan fiction," citing that it contained no useful information, without even posting a discussion. I need to know 1. Whether his judgment was reasonable, but it's hard to get another opinion when the original article doesn't exist anymore, right? and 2. What to do if I think the article should be restored.

Very unhappy and wikistressed, labrt2004

P.S. Since the article doesn't exist anymore and there's no way you can access the history of it, I've copied the edit summary from my watchlist: (diff) (hist) . . Harry Potter fan fiction‎; 04:53 . . (-9,421) . . Fbv65edel (Talk | contribs) (redirect Harry Potter fandom – being bold. This page had too many obscure details that were either for fans only or unverifiable, and the topic is nicely and succinctly covered in fandom article.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Labrt2004 (talkcontribs).

The article had been unilaterally made into a redirect, with no effort at building consensus. I've restored it. --Dweller 10:50, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I'd guessed that. I wrote an extensive reply to Labrt2004 on what to do, hopefully she won't be too confused that the reversion has already taken place! Gotta learn somehow! The Rambling Man 10:52, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

FYI, I have indef blocked the user as a vandalism-only account. I would warn you that the spam in question is NSFW, but it looks like I may be too late. --BigDT 17:22, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

About ACT Productions

I wish to retract my earlier kneejerk reaction. I was still working on the article and had two requests for deletion and I was not even finished yet. I am sorry for being rude and offensive. as you seem to have a lot of experience in Wikipedia could you offer suggestions on how to improve said article.

I do not agree it reads as an advery there is no contact information nor is there any mention of our current season. It is meant as information on a theatre company. Obviously that does not read. I appoligise for being petty and look forward to an adult conversation. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thebigharv (talkcontribs).

Thanks for your comment. To make the article better you need to consider a few key elements.
  1. Is the company notable - in this case you need to examine WP:CORP to see how to meet notability criteria.
  2. Can the notability be verified - you need to prove the notability.
  3. Have sufficient reliable sources been provided - this should provide the verifiability WP is looking for.
Specifically you should try to find independent reviews of ACT Productions that verify it is a notable company. Removing the listings of all the productions would be a good idea too as they really aren't suitable unless the specific productions and/or actors within them were notable (and proved thus, as above). I hope some of this helps, feel free to get in touch if you need more. If you can meet the criteria laid out in WP policies (as linked to above) then the AFD should result in a keep! Cheers! Sympathies

I am so sorry your Rfa was unsuccessful, and that your amusing username actually played a part in that. Take note of the reasons for oppose (except the UName ones, of course) and I am confident you will pass should you decide to attempt again. I am certain someone would have uname blocked me had I registered 3 weeks ago instead of 3 years ago - the bias against names has gotten out of hand, and I have commented several times about this on AN/I, but the trend shows no sign of reversing. Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do to help - oh, and the complaints department was Mfd'd about 2 seconds after someone suggested one. :-P KillerChihuahua?!? 23:07, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi from Lee

I looked at the guidelines and criteria again.

I added Billboard, but that still goes to AMG.

Then I found that Wiki suggests AMG as a primary "resource," so I am confused.

I do not know enough about computers to do this so I will wait until I get to my company people so they can do the research for this. (Monday?)

Stephen Dewart works at Clear Channel. He is the one that called me last week to ask what was happening at Wiki. They are putting up my new material and the existing album.

I have no "puppets." Chris has been a fan for 4 years; God bless her. She seems to pop up whenever I need a lift.

We met in A.A. afew years ago. We both have over 12 years...thank God.

I do not like MySpace. It scares me. It scares me more for my girls.

I'll try to do what you say is the next right thing, and pray.

Matus Valent

What do you make of this bit of self-publicity? It's (IMHO) been created by the subject. But he seems notable... --Dweller 12:51, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey Dweller, been a while! Well, looking at User:Builder's history, he's been around a while, but, admittedly, the last load of edits have been exclusively related to our mate Matus here. It's difficult to see how Mr Valent can meet WP:BIO but it's pretty foggy when dealing with models. I did notice that Category:Male models has a number of articles about pretty bog-standard FHM/GQ models and Valent may well fit into that with his list of work. I'm not particularly comfortable with its notability, but not particularly convinced it needs an AFD. Maybe prod it and see what happens? The Rambling Man 16:47, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

As you set out for Ithaka, hope the voyage is long
Knowledge is your destiny, but don't ever hurry the journey
May there be many summer mornings when
With what pleasure and joy, you come into harbors seen for the first time

Don't expect Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey
And, if I, one of your fellow-travellers, can offer something
To make this journey of yours even more fascinating and enjoyable
This is my assistance with anything I can help.

Your turn! :-) --Dweller 22:24, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm tinkering...! Not sure we'll be able to add any pictures, I've checked Commons for anything suitable. Nothing doing. Grabbing stuff from Google is just not the done thing. We need sourceable licenseable stuff... Hmm... The Rambling Man 19:03, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hope you're OK. Thought you might find this ([2]) interesting. --Dweller 15:45, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, that's interesting. You want me to help out or you think you're covering it? I found a sockpuppet a while ago, very interesting, quite exciting and made me feel like Sherlock Holmes. Or Bergerac. Or similar...! The Rambling Man 19:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

Thank you for your help.

Does that signature work?

No, but have you customised it? If you have then when you place the four tildes you'll add whatever you changed it to. Right now it looks pretty bad. If you go to my preferences, make sure either the signature box is blank or the checkbox is checked so the raw signature is used. Right now, your sig produces a link which looks pretty grim (if I'm honest!!). All the best The Rambling Man 21:21, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
