Question from a newbie

Hey. I'm new here. I ran into you on Motorcycle Operator's Manual where you replaced my WP:PROD with the WP:SPEEDY I removed. I was just curious for guidance from those who've been around. It seemed this wasn't nonense enough for speedying, under the policy, but I understand the policies are more of a helpful guide than hard and fast rules. What are the limits on a nom for speedy that you go by? I'm always way too careful when it comes to marking stuff for deletion. Thanks. AubreyEllenShomo 19:29, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Driving a motorcycle standing on your head explained in a Motorcycle Operator's Manual is clearly nonsense. HighInBC 19:45, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Good point. I was thinking that part was trash, but the article defined "Motorcycle Operator's Manual" so it wasn't a speedy candidate. I now see what I was missing, and will now proceed to boink myself on the head for missing it. (It was that obvious.) Thank you. Thank you also for not biting the newbie with her silly questions. AubreyEllenShomo 20:05, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Wow, glad this discussion resolved itself without me being here! Anyway, I hope that having read the article you understand why I removed the prod and replaced the original {nonsense} template. No need to boink yourself, be bold and be prepared to be told that you've taken it too far/made a misjudegment/completely cocked it up! Cheers for now, if you ever wish to discuss anything else, let me know... Budgiekiller 20:49, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't think we can use db-bio. Notability is claimed, although I have serious doubts. I'm not finding that name on IMDB, nor am I finding those movies (except for a production of Macbeth in 2003). -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:13, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

It's gone, so somebody went ahead and accepted the db-bio tag. Which is fine with me; I'd be shocked if any of it was true. I was actually trying to figure out the policy for something like that (an article where the assertions of notability are clearly fabricated) when you saved me by tagging it for speedy. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Regarding User talk:Wijipediaisgay

I've already added him to WP:AIV based on WP:USERNAME#Inappropriate usernames. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:16, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay! I think he's stopped anyway... Budgiekiller 16:18, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Doesn't matter. Inappropriate username earns a permanent block; doesn't matter if he's actively vandalizing. That username pretty much announces he's not here to help the project. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:21, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Sure thing. Hurrah. Cheers! Budgiekiller 16:22, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Anyway...that should save you some time...next time you run into someone with a name like that, just go ahead and report him directly to WP:AIV with a reason of "Inapppropriate user name". You don't have to run through the warning templates. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:24, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay, cool. I'm primarily interested in reverting his vandalised pages, I tend to notice that some vandals remain on WP:AIV for up to an hour, in which time they can cause havoc. In adding the templates I'd like to think that, at the very least, I'm going to slow down/stop them for a while. Budgiekiller 16:28, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Oh sure, go ahead and warn him too. I guess it depends on how backed up WP:AIV is. Sometimes an admin grabs it and blocks within a few minutes; sometimes it can take an hour. So yeah, go ahead and do both, in whatever order works for you. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:36, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Upcoming template changes

Hi, I've just noticed that you recently left a templated userpage message. I'm just bringing to your attention that the format and context of these templates will be shortly changing. It is recommended that you visit WikiProject user warnings and harmonisation discussion pages to find out how these changes could affect the templates you use. We also would appreciate any insights or thoughts you may have on the subject. Thanks for your understanding. Best regards Khukri (talk . contribs) 11:50, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello

Hi, I just noticed this. You posted a {{test4}} notice on a page of an anon user who has not vandalised since last month. I suggest that you post a few more messages, specially when it is a shared IP address and has not vandalised since a long time. Regards, — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 16:35, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the nature of the IP's edits to Dumbo (which I reverted using VP) were disgusting and, in my mind, clearly warranted either a test4 or a bv. Did you see what the vandal had added in five separate edits here? Budgiekiller 16:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
A strong warning was justified, and in fact I've just reported this IP to WP:AIV for ongoing vandalism. Note that he hasn't vandalized in 20 days because he just came off a 20 day block yesterday. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:53, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jim. I'm afraid that I consider the type of vandalism the IP indulged in to be wholly unacceptable and deserving of a test4 or bv. Glad to see others feel the same. Cheers! Budgiekiller 17:05, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Alphachimp agrees, too; the IP is now blocked until next February. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 17:09, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Admin coaching - November 3 - New recruits

Your coach is The Transhumanist. Exactly what form the admin coaching takes is up to you and the coach to decide, but a general piece of advice I give is to set up a user subpage (for example User:EXAMPLE/Admin coaching) to keep coaching discussion together. That prevents things getting split up over two talk pages, which can get confusing! Let me know on my talk page if you have any questions. Cheers, Highway Grammar Enforcer! 17:02, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

AWB Edits

Hi, Good to see you doing AWB edits with typo fixing

However, i have noticed you are doing quite a lot of 'insignificant edits'

This isn't considered good practise using AWB.

Please could you refrain from doing so again =). I find it is easier to tell AWB to automatically ignore pages with no edits/no changes, or no typo fixes

Thanks

Reedy Boy 19:39, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair point. Today's the first day I've used the tool so forgive my indiscretions with it. Hopefully my insignificant edits haven't caused too many problems. In the future I'll do my best to ensure that I set AWB to ignore these mods. Cheers for the pointer! Budgiekiller 20:24, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
No worries, a lot of people do it, we just like to make people aware of it. You wont have caused many (if any) problems doing so, its just a bit of a waste of wikipedia resources doing little edits such as removing _ from wiki links. Hence the reason we dont do this as a standalone edit, whereas, if you are editing a typo at the same time, no problem whatsoever =)
FYI, these are the skips i use. 'Skip Articles when no changes made', 'Skip non-existing pages', 'Skip article when no typo fixed'. This makes your own life easier, as you dont have to click ignore all the time, as the program skips over these edits! Reedy Boy 21:22, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Old Farm derby

Could you write an article on the Old Farm derby? Everton 10:57, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

I could certainly give it a go! However, I'm not sure it's notable enough to make an article of its own. There could be scope for adding something into each of the Ipswich Town F.C. and Norwich City F.C. articles though... I'll have a think about it. Cheers! Budgiekiller 11:08, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Okay, I had a look around, there's plenty of precedent for local derby pages. I've added East Anglian Derby and created a redirect at Old Farm derby so hopefully that's start. I'll add more history and stats when I get a chance. Cheers! Budgiekiller 12:55, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

From User:Pumpapa

Why on earth did you reset http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Heligoland&diff=86096781&oldid=86089888 Because of a bug some comment of mine ended up in someone else's post, so I removed it, as seems appropriate. I do not understand why you reverted it, though if it makes you feel happy...

Best regards,

Pum —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pumpapa (talkcontribs).

Hey, I can only apologise if this has caused any distress. From my perspective a lot of text was being removed from a user talk page so I reverted the edit. Can I recommend that you use the four ~ signature (i.e. ~~~~) when you make your edits? Please let me know if this bug happens again and we can look into solving it. Cheers! Budgiekiller 19:39, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Uh, when he says "make your edits", he means when you make comments on talk pages... Right? JDtalk 19:40, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

(I'm new to this and I appologize for not signing etc.)

What happens when you post in talk and forget to sign and forget to add a subject, the comment is tagged at the end of the last post. For newbies like myself this is a bug, but perhaps it is a feature. Pumpapa 19:52, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey, no problems, try using the + at the top of the talk page - this creates a new section for you, as long as you fill in the subject field. Other than that you'd have to add ==Heading== where "Heading" is the subject of the section you want to add. Hope this is clear, feel free to ask more! Cheers! Budgiekiller 19:59, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Comment from User:68.235.181.214

I deleted the entry from antipsychiatry because I believe it to be factual wrong. It was unsubstantiated. I am currently teaching the neurobiology course section on schizophrenia and it appears that someone from the antipsychiatry page has rewritten the schizophrenia section drastically. The antipsychiatry section was similarly misleading. If you repost it, put disputed next to it so people can evaluate the material for themselves. Dr. Nadia Webb, Diplomate pediatric and adult neuropsychology. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.235.181.214 (talkcontribs).

Hello! Thanks for your comment. I reinstated the material you deleted because there was no edit summary stating why the information had been removed and the edit was made from an anonymous account. This is behaviour typical of vandals, and while, in this case, it may not have been intended to be vandalism, that is why the information was added back into the article. If you feel that the information needs citation or is not factual then it is a better idea to tag the article or sections of the article with the appropriate templates (e.g. {{fact}} or Template:Disputeabout). Hopefully this helps explain why I made the edit I did. If you have any other comments or questions, please let me know. Cheers! Budgiekiller 15:11, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Heather Lisinski page

Hi there. Why the reversion? Both versions were from me (doggone those AOL proxies). Each week I shorten the article a little to make room for information from the next episode of "Jericho," or else the length will be untenable (especially after 22 episodes). I tweak various words at times, so perhaps the number of edits was flagged. I don't own the page, but I don't think the reversion was an improvement, either. Thanks for your consideration and your response - 152.163.101.14 10:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, that was an itchy trigger finger methinks! I've reviewed the diff and agree with you, so my sincere apologies for my over-zealous revert! Thanks for letting me know. Cheers! Budgiekiller 10:30, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Not a problem. I try to keep watch on that page, and I'm glad others do, too. Sorry if I tweak a lot, it's a bad habit of mine even though I do use the "preview" button. Best wishes and thanks for your vigilance! 152.163.101.14 10:34, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Can you revert that page back to where it was? I'm a relative newbie here and am not sure how to do that. Thanks. 152.163.101.14 10:38, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey, it's done. If you wish to revert a page in the future, look at the history, and click on the date of the version you wish to revert to. Then edit the page - you'll be warned you're editing an older version. Saving it immediately with an edit summary like "reverting to old version because..." will then restore your page back to the way it was. Hope this helps, and feel free to ask me anything more. Oh, and since your contributions are more than welcome, why not get an account? It's free and easy! Cheers! Budgiekiller 10:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Much obliged (and thanks for the tutorial!). I do have an account, but there were some terrible arguments on the "Jericho" talk page (see archive), and I decided to remain anon most of the time. I don't care if I'm logged in or not as long as I can make the edits, though I'm sure anon edits are carefully scrutinized. Thanks again - 152.163.101.14 10:52, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Chocola Article

All I did was change two words to present tense; the November general election has already happened. I don't understand why you are being unnecessarily zealous. You should not have disputed this change. Moreover, the citation that is after the sentence that I modified is just a link to Joe Donnely's website. Maybe you should consider changing that as well. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 141.218.133.190 (talkcontribs).

Indeed. My urgency to revert vandalism has taken its toll once more. I apologise. You may note that another user had edited this article since I reverted the changes. I'll add your changes back in and please accept my apolgoies for this poor edit! All I would suggest is that you fill in the edit summary when modifying a page so that editors can clearly see why you've changed a page. Cheers!Budgiekiller 20:52, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

It's alright. Thanks for the advice on filling out the summary; I normally don't. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 141.218.60.36 (talkcontribs) .

Question about link removal.

Hello sir,

I am trying to find out why the links on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prop_replica keep getting removed. The links there provide a valuable resource to anyone who collects replica props. In fact many of the discoveries that lead to the production of these replicas have been found at these sites.

I do not want to cause a problem, so I will not revert the page again. I am just looking for an answer as to what is wrong with links that have purpose and are very much apart of replica props.

Thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.13.204.194 (talkcontribs).

Hi there! Thanks for your polite comment on my revert of your edit. I can't explain why your edits keep getting reverted other than explain why I reverted yours. Firstly your edit was, I believe, not particularly encyclopaedic. In other words I think you could have phrased your addition in a more neutral point of view. Secondly, your changes to the headings were in conflict with Wikipedia's manual of style. Hopefully this adds some insight into why your edit (on this occasion) was reverted. Please feel free to contact me further if you wish me to elaborate! Thanks again for your comments. Cheers! Budgiekiller 21:01, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Haha, unlike the rest of the new version, the mod tools are still a bit buggy ;-) Prodego talk 01:59, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Comments from User:70.162.148.36

In the US Declaration of Independence article, I have made precise edits to bring the transcript into compliance with that published at:

http://www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/declaration_transcript.html

This transcript is from the same "Stone" document image which appears elsewhere in the article. This includes spelling errors and punctuation that may have been "corrected" by others (either later transcriptions or those reading the article). It is easy for readers to compare, side-by-side, the transcript with the scanned document.

So I believe my edits are valid and contribute to the transcription being as close as possible to the original (within the constraints that Wiki allow).

Either you incorrctly reverted my edits, or your program incorrectly identified them as vandalism. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.162.148.36 (talkcontribs).

Wow, my apologies. In my over-exuberence, you're absolutely right, I made a big mistake reverting your edit. I unreservedly apologise and hope that you continue to make good edits like this in the future. Thanks for bringing my erroneous edit to my attention. Cheers!
