Tomb Raider: The Golden Mask, or Tomb Raider II: Gold is an extra set of levels bundled with later releases of the PC version of Tomb Raider II. It is the second game in the Tomb Raider: Gold series, and, like the others, contains no cutscenes or FMVs.

Unlike the other two Gold games, however, The Golden Mask contains no story ties to its corresponding game from the main Tomb Raider series. Its plot is completely unique.

[edit] Story

During the course of her day-to-day investigative research, Lara Croft comes across some clues referring to a small island in the Bering Sea: a faded photograph showing an Inuit Whalehunter holding what looks like an ancient Golden Mask, an old newspaper from 1945 referring to a conflict over an Alaskan gold discovery, and a secret kind of fortified military minebase.

Lara is primarily interested in finding the Mask, as it is rumored to be the famed Golden Mask of Tornarsuk - a greater spirit said to bestow powers of re-animation on the mask wearer.[1]

[edit] Levels

Tomb Raider: The Golden Mask contains five levels:

  • The Cold War - This level takes place in a military minebase in Alaska. The level is fairly easy, and involves killing plenty of mercenaries. The level also includes a lengthy snowmobile driving section.
  • Fool's Gold - Delving deeper into the minebase and eventually underground, this level is significantly more difficult than the previous level. There are many more mercenaries to kill, some of which now have flamethrowers.
  • Furnace of the Gods - A lost underground civilization, featuring huge lakes of burning yellow liquid. This is where Lara obtains the Mask of Tonarsuk.
  • Kingdom - A vast forest inhabited by bigfoots. Lara uses the mask to summon a giant golden bird monster. The game ends once the creature has been killed.
  • Nightmare in Vegas - A 'joke' level, accessible only by collecting all of the game's secrets. The entire level takes place in a hotel in Las Vegas, and it is believed to be one of Lara Croft's dreams. The level features T-Rexes, Lara's butler Winston, and a rematch with the large bird monster seen previously in Kingdom.

[edit] Trivia

  • Lara wears the brown bomber jacket she found in Tomb Raider II throughout all of the levels except Nightmare in Vegas.
  • The golden bird monster Lara faces at the end of the game is similar to the one found in the Ice Palace level of Tomb Raider II.
  • Two enemies found in this game are actually from the first Tomb Raider rather than the second. These are the wolves and polar bears (although in the first game they were grizzly bears) seen in Furnace of the Gods.
  • Originally, Nightmare in Vegas was supposed to be completely in black and white, with only Lara in color.
    • Lara was also originally wearing a leopardskin outfit in this level.
