Thessaloniki Urban Area
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thessaloniki Urban Area consists of thirteen municipalities and one community. It is the urban core of the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area. The urban area is sometimes referred to as the city of Thessaloniki, as there is no clear visual distinction or geographic barrier between the municipality of Thessaloniki and the other municipalities of the area. The largest of the municipalities, in terms of population is the municipality of Thessaloniki.
The remaining municipalities, in descending order of population, are: Kalamaria, Evosmos, Stavroupoli, Ampelokipoi, Sykies, Polichni, Neapoli, Pylaia, Eleftherio-Kordelio, Menemeni, Triandria, Agios Pavlos and the community of Efkarpia.
When Thessalonians refer to the city of Thessaloniki, they refer to this urban area. The municipality of Thessaloniki is commonly called "Kentro" or "Center."
As the urban area has grown, there is no more room for more people and a metropolitan area has emerged.
