Theological Markup Language

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A theological markup language format created by Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL), a volunteer organization to create electronic theological texts. Theological Markup Language (ThML) is a "royalty-free" XML based format that was first created in 1998[1]. Other formats such as STEP and Logos Library System (LLS) are proprietary. The ThML format borrowed elements from a somewhat similar format, the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI).

As of September 19, 2006, CCEL has 650 documents in this format[2]. The advantage of using an XML based format is that a ThML text can be converted into HTML by using a XSL stylesheet. Also, conversion to PDF and RTF can be done with standard XML conversion tools.

The last Definition of the format, version 1.04, is dated January 20, 2003[3].
