Theme Time Radio Hour is a one hour radio show hosted by Bob Dylan. The first program was broadcast on May 3, 2006 (for a subscription) on the Deep Tracks channel of XM Satellite Radio. It is broadcast every Wednesday at 10:00am ET with several "encore" repeats throughout the week.[1] DirecTV subscribers can also hear the show on the Deep Tracks simulcast on channel 840.
In August 2006 AOL Radio began offering the show on AOL Radio featuring XM a selection of 200 XM radio stations which is available to those with an AOL login (registration is currently free) and a broadband internet connection.
In 2007 the program also began appearing for free on BBC Radio 2 and BBC6 Music for listeners in the UK.
It is unknown how many episodes of the show will be produced, although Rolling Stone's August 2006 cover feature on Dylan noted that he had agreed to at least 50 episodes.[2]
"Theme Time Radio Hour" reflects Dylan's, and very probably producer Eddie Gorodetsky's, deep interest in and knowledge of music. As the playlists below show, each episode is an eclectic brew of blues, rockabilly, soul music, bebop, rock-and-roll and pop music, with songs from artists as diverse as Patti Page to LL Cool J. Interspersed between the music segments are email readings (although the emails appear to be staged rather than mail from actual listeners), poetry recitations, and scripted commentary from Dylan on the music as well as recipes and other oddities related to the themes. It should be noted that various articles from Wikipedia have been discovered to be sources of information on various episodes. At times these references are verbatim or near verbatim quotes from these articles.
[edit] Episodes (original US running order, UK running order differs)
Each episode is usually introduced by an uncredited female voice murmuring "It's night (or night time) in the Big City" and then reciting a few descriptive lines of a cityscape scene; a woman walks in the rain, a shopkeeper closes his doors, angry hookers arguing on a streetcorner. At times, those intros can be interpreted to have some relation to the respective show's theme, while at other times the relationship appears tenuous. Although not acknowledged until Episode 34, the 2-hr Christmas/New Year's special program which featured her Christmas greeting, the opening voice-over is by Ellen Barkin with the exception of the Halloween Episode 26 which was introduced by the comedian Steven Wright.
