[edit] Background

The DM Online was once a part of The Daily Mississippian, the student newspaper of The University of Mississippi. In an effort to increase the multimedia efforts of the S. Gale Denley Student Media Center, the umbrella organization that houses all of Ole Miss' student publications (The DM Online, The Daily Mississippian, NewsWatch Television, Rebel Radio 92.1 and The Ole Miss Annual), the Web site was made independent of the paper and it's editor in chief. It received its own staff dedicated to multimedia efforts.

[edit] Staff

The DM Online currently employs a management staff of eight and numerous reporters, both video and print. The management staff includes an editor in chief, managing editor, section directors and editors and an assignment editor. The current editor in chief is Jermaine Jackson, a junior student at the university. He is the second editor in chief of The DM Online.

[edit] Goals

The goal of the management staff of The DM Online is to encourage multimedia efforts in the face of journalism, an industry that changes daily. The Web site incorporates text articles, video products, flash productions, slideshows, audio and other multimedia elements in the telling of a story. Its mission is to strengthen the multimedia efforts of the S. Gale Denley Student Media Center through convergence. This means the medium incorporates the television, radio and newspaper into its own production, often including stories and products from these media online.

[edit] Editors in Chief

  • Brandon Scott Ross (Spring 2006)
  • Jermaine Terrell Jackson (Summer 2006 to present)

[edit] Honors

In the time since the publication became independent from the newspaper, the Web site has received numerous honors, including but not limited to, EPpy finalist for college publication and recognition from VOICE and the Southeastern Journalism Conference.

[edit] Criticism

The DM Online, because of its independent status from the newspaper, has come under fire from some officials who feel the medium does not require independence. Detractors claim the Web site uses more people to do a job any newspaper person could do. Editor in chief Jackson says the Web site's independence is crucial to improving journalism and preparing for that field.

"Years ago a news organization could just hand the consumer a news piece with the "you need us so take it like we want to give it to you" attitude. Today, the consumer demands more. We live in a society that watches television while messaging online and talking on their cellular phone. Online is the future of journalism and we are trying to prepare for that with The DM Online."
