The Wrestler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wrestler is a 1974 independent film produced by Verne Gagne and starred Ed Asner as "Frank Bass" a wrestling promoter.

Verne Gagne also starred in the movie as "Mike Bollard" who is the current wrestling champ of his "league". Gagne not only acts in the movie but also wrestles during a few of the wrestling scenes. He is in the first match which is located in the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He wrestles Larry Henning in the first match in the movie.

Many AWA wrestlers made appearances in the movie. Among them were Billy Gharam, Rick Flair (credited with that spelling in the credits), Dusty Rhodes, Dick Mordoch, The Bruiser, Dory Funk Jr, Pedro Morales and more. Some of those were actually just featured as being in clips from wrestling shows without adding to the actual plot or having them be on the actual set of the film rather than actual acting roles.

Vincent McMahon makes an appearance in an actual acting role and not a clip from a show.
