[edit] Synopsis
In this pivotal episode, the Moyans discover that Aeryn, when a Peacekeeper, helped to kill Moya's previous pilot at Crais' order. The distraught Aeryn explains to Crichton that several cycles earlier, she helped to bring Moya's new Pilot to Moya, and while doing so, fell in love with Lieutenant Velorek, the Leviathan expert charged with bonding the new Pilot with Moya and helping Crais with a secret Leviathan project. In flashbacks, Velorek tells Aeryn that she is different from other Peacekeepers, and she can be "so much more" in the right environment, and he invites her to accompany him in a more long-term relationship. Such a relationship is taboo amongst the Peacekeepers, who are allowed to "recreate" with others in order to release physical tension, but who are forbidden from doing so openly or with any longevity. At that time, Aeryn was also trying to gain the attention of her superiors so that she could be restored to her previous duty of Prowler pilot--she had been pulled off that job to escort Velorek.
While Aeryn is explaining, Rygel gives Pilot the disk showing Aeryn's role in killing the previous Pilot, which enrages Pilot enough that he almost kills Aeryn. He then stops Moya and refused to go any further until Aeryn is ejected from the ship. Soon, he reveals he's really angry at himself--had he not agreed to help Velorek, they couldn't have killed the other Pilot. Pilot had wanted to circumvent normal channels because he was too immature to be bonded with a Leviathan yet, but he was desperate to see the stars. Pilot then disconnects himself from Moya as punishment for his behavior, dooming himself to death by starvation.
Aeryn then tells Crichton the reason she has kept him at a distance for so long: her relationship with Velorek ended badly. In order to gain her superior's attention and get Prowler duty, she reveals to Crais that Velorek is a traitor and has sabotaged the secret Leviathan project in some way. She regrets it immediately but it is too late; Velorek is tortured and executed, but never tells how he has sabotaged the project. The Moyans realize that the project must have been the Leviathan/Gunship hybrid project that resulted in Talyn's creation. Aeryn goes to Pilot and together they make peace with their past deeds, and agree to take the journey together.
