The Waitstaff hatched in a brainstorming discussion in an actor's kitchen in 2002. It was conceived as a Brick Playhouse program when the small theater still operated on South Street in Center City.

The group, working as a democratic collective, wrote and performed comic sketches as The Dive, producing an original show for the third Saturday of every month from July 2002 until The Brick closed its South Street doors (evicted by the building owner's bankruptcy) in June 2003. The Dive performed in the 2003 Fringe Festival at the Adrienne Theatre on Sansom Street, but parted with The Brick (which kept the "Dive" name) in fall of 2003. [1]

Rechristened "The Waitstaff", the group debuted its new name and independence in November of 2003 at Mum Puppettheatre in Old City, Philadelphia. Since then, they have performed regularly at The Five Spot, also in Old City, and World Cafe Live, in University City.

[edit] The Name

The Waitstaff took their name from the profession most out of work actors and actresses take up.
