The Wails
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wails are a musical group from Brooklyn, New York, comprised of guitarist Tom Hagen, vocalist Caroline, bassist Craig, and drummer/tabla player Nick Smith. The Wails, one could say, had its genesis over 10 years ago in Columbia Mo when Caroline and Tom played in the band "iD". After college, Caroline and Tom moved to opposite ends of the east coast: Caroline to Miami to continue her acting and musical theater career, and Tom to Brooklyn to play as much music as possible. Tom met Craig and they played for many years in KH Franklyn until Craig moved to Boulder, Colorado and started playing with the Free Jam Society.
In the Spring of 2002 Caroline moved to New York. She and Tom immediately formed an acoustic duo, "the Lollards". Recognizing that an acoustic sound was not enough, Caroline and Tom began the process of auditioning countless musicians. Many were flakes, and of those that could play, none seemed to 'get it'.
Craig returned to New York and spent a lot of time in the painting studio. Caroline and Tom seized the opportunity and asked Craig to join in the fall of 2004. In the early part of 2005 Nick answered an ad in the Voice and the Wails, having changed their name, now had a complete lineup and sound. Nick, with his tabla training, not only brought a solid beat but also a worldly feel. The Wails recorded their debut album Via in June of 2005 with Jason Lafarge at Seizures Palace. Craig and Caroline have moved on to other projects. Craig is showing his artwork in Galleries in New York and Caroline has joined the treehouse shakers. Nick and Tom continue on with The Wails.
