[edit] Plot

A scientist, along with his assistant Rat, has the power to shoot cannonballs at people to put them in a state of permanent depression. He asks the Mayor for money for his invention, but the Mayor refuses. Dr. Zalost says that if he refuses then he will use the people of Nowhere for experiments, but the Mayor just scorns him. Dr. Zalost does as he said, shooting people in Nowhere and putting them in a terrible state of depression. The Mayor gives in and gives Dr. Zalost his money, but still Dr. Zalost does not stop, shooting everyone he can see, believing that if he must be unhappy, everyone else must be unhappy. When Eustace comes out to fetch a paper, he shoots Eustace, only to find that the cannons have no effect on him. He follows Eustace in his walking tower, and manages to shoot Muriel, putting her in a hopelessly depressed state of mind. Courage, teaming up with Eustace, gets into the tower, where he runs into Dr. Zalost's assistant, Rat. A depression cannonball turns Rat into a monster, but Courage shoots a happy plum (a plum dish that Muriel had been preparing before becoming depressed) into the rats mouth and turns him into a harmless baby.

Courage runs into Dr. Zalost, where he must play hangman against him, which he wins. Dr. Zalost is enraged, and when Courage reverses the effects of the cannons, and fires cannons that make people happy again, the furious Dr. Zalost chases Courage back to the farmhouse with one of the remaining depression cannonballs. Courage cures Muriel, and when Dr. Zalost eats one of Muriel's happy plums, he also becomes happy and looks after the also happy Rat. Everything returns to normal once again.
