[edit] Plot
The episode starts off when Squidward looks outside and it's silent. He thinks that for once he'll have some peace and quiet. Just as he turns on a public television program, SpongeBob and Patrick appear and come inside to watch TV with him. Squidward kicks the two of them out and gets on his bike. While he's riding, Squidward collides into a cement truck and the truck spills cement on him. He goes through a dumpster, hill and on the ground. Covered in cement and unrecognizable, Squidward finds himself in Jellyfish Fields.
Immediately after, SpongeBob and Patrick come across Squidward and, thinking he's an unknown species of animal, name him Smelly and take him to SpongeBob's house. Next, SpongeBob gives Smelly a tour of his house. Gary doesn't take too well to Smelly and so Patrick decides to keep the latter at his house (because he's "always wanted a pet"). Once there, Smelly acts up and a frantic Patrick calls Animal Control. The police soon arrive and surround the area, and so Smelly is taken the zoo. The next night, SpongeBob and Patrick break into Smelly's cage and try to hide from the Zoo Guards. They hide in a sewer which leads to a place where a type of species that resemble the cement-covered Squidward live. The creatures carry Squidward away and to his surprise, the musician that was on the TV that SpongeBob, Squidward and Patrick were watching is there playing the clarinet. As he's watching the musician, the cement covering Squidward cracks open. (this scene was similar to Jellyfishing when Squidward's cast breaks after the Giant Jellyfish stings him).
[edit] Trivia/Goofs
- Sometime after Squidward gets coated in cement he releases an air bubble and when it pops Squidward screams. This is because of how the cement burns the skin when it makes contact.
- Commercials show that this episode airs on January 15 with the "Guide to: Revenge & School Records" episode of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide.
- This episode aired in the US before Germany and the UK. Usually, it is the other way around.
- The episode is named after the creature from the self titled movie The Thing.
- It is revealed Gary only attacks Squidward.
- This is the first appearance of a military fish service and the military service bus.
- Second episode to have a title card that takes place in the Kelp Forest. The first was in "The Algae's Always Greener."
- Second appearance of a land giant clam, first being Tea at the Treedome."
- In his "cemented" state, Squidward looked a lot like a Pikmin, a Nintendo Gamecube game character and Bloo, of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
- The jellyfish in this episode are pink and purple, a reference to the level in one of the SpongeBob video games, Battle for Bikini Bottom, in which SpongeBob must defeat the King JellyFish.
- Also, the squid on TV looks similar to Squidward from his dream in SquidBob TentaclePants.
- When Squidward in his cement form was at the zoo, first the sign said "unknown species" then when it was night time it said "species unknown"
- When Squidward's cement skin cracked, it was similar to a scene in Jellyfishing when the giant jellyfish stung Squidward and his cast broke.
- When Squidward's cement skin cracked, he says: "Uh... Hi!" to smellies. It was similar to a scene in Bubble Buddy when bubble buddy leaves, and Squidward says: "Eh... Hi!" to a bubble, but then it pops.
- The clarinet the clarinetist is using sounds more like a saxophone.
- The music playing in the background as Spongebob says, "We'll be one big, happy family" is the same music used in the Ren and Stimpy episode Robin Hoek (when Ren starts dreaming).
- It is revealed Squidward likes to listen to jazz.
- Patrick said that he had always wanted a pet. Did he forget about Rocky?
- When Patrick makes a call on the phone, you are able to hear a small amount of the theme song from Kablam's Sniz And Fondue.
- Spongebob's grape juice box background is yellow yet Patrick's is purple, but later they are both purple.
- When Gary attacks Smelly Spongebob says "Yeah, Gary never attacked anyone like that." yet in the episode Once Bitten Gary bites everyone in Bikini Bottom.
- The clarinetist may be a parody of Kenny G.
