The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread (pronounced "Despero") is a fantasy book by Kate DiCamillo that won the Newbery Medal in 2004.
[edit] Plot summary
The story tells the tale of a mouse named Despereaux, born with a daring heart and romantic spirit who falls desperately in love with the human Princess Pea. His life is bound by chance with her, the king, the rats, a jailer, a dim witted girl, and a cook who makes soup. DiCamillo involves ideas of inner duality (good and evil), abandonment and redemption. Also, has to deal with the fact that he is different than everybody else.
[edit] Film
A film version of the book is going to be released in 2008.
