[edit] Techniques & Upgrades:
[edit] SpongeBob SquarePants:
- Karate Spin: With his foam karate hands on, Spongebob whirls into a circle of fury, karate chopping everything around him.
Upgrade: SpongeBob's foam hands turn into steel, giving his chops more strength and allowing them to deflect enemy projectiles.
- Bash: SpongeBob rockets into the air, hitting anything above him with a large red boxing glove.
Upgrade: SpongeBob's boxing glove turns into a metal gauntlet with spikes on the knuckles that allow it to stick into the target. The gauntlet is also a time bomb, detonating in 3 seconds if left alone. Or, it can be detonated immediately by pressing the button again.
- Spongebowl: SpongeBob whips out a regular bowling ball to strike targets from afar. The longer you hold the button, the farther the bowling ball will roll.
Upgrade: SpongeBob's bowling ball turns into a spherical electric bomb with spikes protruding from it. If the ball makes mass contact, or if the button is pressed again while it is rolling, it will detonate, striking anything near.
- Sonic Wave Guitar: SpongeBob whips out an electric guitar and fires a sonic wave missile from it that can be directed into the target(s) for long distanced attacks. The sonic wave missile has a time limit of five seconds, and will dispel by itself when the time limit is up and the missile still has not hit anything. When in this form it looks like a red Flying V.
Upgrade: SpongeBob's guitar upgrades to be able to "home in" on the target(s). It can also hit multiple targets if they are close together. When in this form it looks like Goofy Goober, like the guitar SpongeBob used in the movie itself.
[edit] Other Techniques:
- Wall Jump: SpongeBob can use this technique to scale certain walls and cliffs by jumping off of one wall, then jumping off of the opposing wall, and repeating this process until the wall is scaled; similar to Mario's classic move in Super Mario 64
- Spongeball: Not really an "attack", SpongeBob just rolls into a ball of "spongy goodness" to roll through the given obstacle course at the start of a Spongeball challenge.
- Bungee: When SpongeBob comes into contact with a fish hook, he can use his extra-stretchy underwear as a bungee cord to complete bungee challenges.
[edit] Patrick Star:
- Star Spin: The exact same thing as SpongeBob's Karate Spin, except that Patrick's hands are bare.
Upgrade: Pink bolts of power appear when Patrick does his Spin Move, giving the spins more power and allowing them to deflect enemy projectiles.
- Cartwheel: Patrick starts cartwheeling quickly, harming most anything in his path. Also, since cartwheeling is faster than walking, it may be used as an alternate form of transportation.
Upgrade: A molten shield appears in front of Patrick while he's spinning, allowing him to damage anything that comes too near. Also, a bright "tail" appears behind Patrick while he's spinning, making him resemble a comet.
- Bad Word No. 11 Smash: Patrick, while in the air, does a cannonball that smashes anything directly below him.
Upgrade: Patrick does a head slam instead, and when he does it, a shockwave appears, temporarily stunning any enemies near Patrick. This move can also be combined with Patrick's throw move, allowing him to use stunned enemies as weapons to toss onto targets.
- Pick Up/Throw: Patrick picks up any "liftable" objects next to him (shown by a cursor that appears above the object), and tosses it at a certain target. Patrick can toss throw-fruit or Plankton's Plan-Z supply crates, or, if combined with the $#@!!?! Smash, he can also use stunned enemies as projectiles.
Upgrade: Patrick's throw move acquires "improved targeting", which allows him to toss the projectile(s) much farther and twice as hard. Unfortunately, the projectile will break immediately after it hits something.
[edit] Other Techniques:
- Tongue swing: When Patrick comes into contact with an ice cube (suspended in midair by a balloon), he can use his tongue as a grappling hook to swing across dangerous areas. The more momentum he gains by swinging, the farther he will go when his tongue is released.
[edit] Enemies
[edit] Common enemies:
Jellyfish: Jellyfish are the basic foot soldiers of the game. They are also the only moving enemy that does not chase after your character. Rather, they only sting when your character makes physical contact with them. Jellyfish do not upgrade throughout the game.
Located in levels: 1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 16
Fogger: Foggers are slow-moving fish that breathe out a cloud of stinky, toxic breath. They cannot run faster than your character, and after attacking, must retreat to recharge, making themselves sitting ducks. They eventually upgrade to become more durable, taking 2 spins to destroy, instead of one.
Located in levels: 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 16
Slammer: Slammers are fast-moving fish carrying a heavy object that they can "slam" your character with. Although your character cannot outrun them, their attacks come at an angle, so it's not very hard to dodge. Slammers do not upgrade throughout the game.
Located in levels: 2, 4, 6, 8, 15
Enemy Spawner: These machines do not attack or even move, rather, they teleport other enemies on to the area. As long as an enemy spawner is still functioning, it will continue to spawn enemies, but only one hit is needed to shut them down-permanently. However, after an enemy spawner is hit, it will explode, damaging anything caught in the blast. Enemy spawners do not upgrade throughout the game.
Located in levels: 2, 4, 10, 11, 16
Flinger: Flingers are fish that hover in the sky, spitting acidic goo. If the goo makes contact with your character, not only will it cause damage, but it will make your character slip and slide around uncontrollably for a short amount of time. Flingers are also immune to spin moves, as they will just bounce off. Flingers' "acid bombs" can be "returned" for damage via upgraded spin moves. They can be hurt by a Level 2 Bash. Flingers eventually upgrade to become more durable, taking 3 returns to destroy instead of 2.
Located in levels: 4, 10, 11, 18
Spinner: Spinners consist of a fish holding a ferocious sea worm. When a Spinner attacks, is whirls into a spinning frenzy, with the fish swinging around the worm by its leash. While attacking, the worm will bite through anything in its path to get to your character. Spinners cannot be hurt while spinning....from the sides, anyways. Spinners eventually upgrade to become more durable, taking 3 spins to destroy instead of 2.
Located in levels: 6, 8, 11, 12, 16
Turret: Turrets are fish hiding in barrels. When they sense your character nearby, they flip open the barrel's lid and fire a barrage of bullets from their pistol. Their shots can be "returned" via upgraded spin attacks. Turrets do not upgrade throughout the levels and only take one hit to destroy.
Located in levels: 6, 10, 16
Popper: Poppers are units that shoot bullets at your characters, then dive underground and reappear somewhere else. Poppers will also dive if your character gets too close or if they've taken damage but haven't been destroyed. Poppers' shots may be "returned" via upgraded spin moves. Poppers upgrade from firing 3 slow shots to 6 fast shots.
Located in levels: 10, 16
Merv: Mervs are almost purely mechanical units that are armed with two lasers - a targeting laser and a laser that deals pure damage and can rarely be dodged. Both are only activated if your character gets too close. They are also armed with a gravitational beam that can repel the Spongebowl attack. Mervs upgrade to not only have lasers, but two missile-firers that shoot out missiles which break up into 5 smaller but equally dangerous missiles. These missiles can be "returned" via upgraded spin moves.
Located in levels: 11, 16
[edit] Mini-Bosses:
Giant Red Deep-Sea Shrimp: Located in the trench as the guardian of one of the doors. Shoots giant eyeballs at your character. The only way to get it to leave is to Spongebowl it 3 times.
Multi-Eyed Sea Monster: Also located in the trench as the guardian of one of the bridges. It is rather easy to defeat, as it does not attack, and all you have to do to defeat it is Spongebowl all five of its eyes.
Plankton Statues: Located all throughout Planktopolis. These statues broadcast signals that activate Plankton's mind-controlling bucket hats. These statues shoot chunks of lava at your character from the eye, and the only way to destroy them is to launch a sonic wave into the eye when it's not shooting (sometimes more than once).
[edit] Bosses:
Frogfish: The first boss you encounter is the frogfish that SpongeBob and Patrick encounter before the Great Trench. After the frogfish lures SpongeBob in with ice cream, SpongeBob is caught, and Patrick has to rescue him. At first, the frogfish will charge at Patrick, so the player must dodge him and attack when he is peeking into the abyss to do damage. When the frogfish sends its tongue (still disguised as an old grandma) in, at first the frogfish will slam its tongue against the ground, and will later a spin it around. It will also shoot acid at the player. Once again the player must dodge its attacks and hit it to do damage. Repeat this process until the frogfish's health bar is empty.
Dennis: The hitman hired by Plankton to kill SpongeBob and Patrick. When the two first encounter hin after journeying through the junk heap, he will use SpongeBob as a hockey stick to whack old toilets (which create a ring of putrid, green gas when they hit the ground) at Patrick. The player can either "return" the toilets or throw melons to do damage. As Dennis' health decreases he will call on help in the form of spinners. After Dennis is defeated he gets squashed by the cyclops' boot, but this isn't the last you'll see of him. After SpongeBob and Patrick have retrieved King Neptune's crown from Shell City, and are getting a lift from David to Bikini Bottom, the boot that squashed Dennis returns, along with Dennis! This time, he throws strings of daggers at SpongeBob. To beat him, use the same strategy as last time. As Dennis' health decreases, he will call in Slammers. After Dennis is defeated, he gets hit by a boat.
Buckethead King Neptune: This is King Neptune, but under the control of one of Plankton's bucket helmets. He cannot be hurt by any attacks at first, because he will just swat you away if you get too close, and he can block the sonic wave with his trident. First, Neptune will shoot streams of "brown stuff." If you can successfully dodge two streams without getting hit, Neptune will switch to "sniper mode", shooting lasers from his trident. In this mode, everything is from Neptune's point of view. The player must dodge his attacks until he runs out of ammo, at which point he will reload. While he is reloading, the player must hit 5 mirrors with the spin. After all 5 mirrors are turned, the player must hide behind the frozen Mr. Krabs and wait for Neptune's laser to reflect off the ice, causing a chain reaction where the laser will bounce off the mirrors and finally hit Neptune, stunning him. At this point, hit Neptune with a sonic wave to do damage. After Neptune has lost one-third of his health, he will fire an electric wave from his trident. Once again, the player must dodge this and the lasers, hit the mirrors, and hide behind Krabs. After Neptune has lost another third of his health, he will break the floor to pieces and call in two flingers as backup. The player must still use the same strategy, but avoiding cracks and the flingers. After Neptune is defeated his bucket hat will crack.
[edit] Collectibles
Goofy Goober Tokens: Earned after completing a level or challenge for the first time. Certain amounts of Goofy Goober Tokens are needed to purchase new moves that are needed to access certain levels.
Manliness Points: Manliness points depict just how "manly" SpongeBob and Patrick are. Manliness points can be found just lying around, or can be earned by destroying Plankton's "Plan Z" supply containers and/or defeating enemies. If a whole batch is destroyed, there will be a bonus of extra manliness points. The tougher an enemy or a container is, the more manliness points it will be worth. However, if you get too many manliness points, everything will be worth 1 manliness point.
Upgrade Points: When a certain amount of manliness points are gained, an upgrade point is earned. Upgrade points can be used to upgrade an attack or add an extra health slot.
Krabby Patties: SpongeBob and Patrick's health are measured in these delicious treats. Stray Krabby Patties can also be used to replenish health.
Treasure Chests: These chests are located all throughout the game. Some are in plain sight, while others are more hidden, and a few need complicated "rituals" to acquire. Treasure chests contain extras, which can be used to view film trailers, view film clips, give SpongeBob and Patrick alternate outfits (or strip them naked), view movie artwork and the game's original artwork, change the looks (and sounds) of certain items in the game, and listen to witty quotes from the characters (not all of them are in the movie).
Nitro Fuel Pods: Only found on driving levels. When activated by the R1 button, gives the Patty Wagon a temporary turbo speed boost. Only 10 fuel pods can be stored at a time.
[edit] Items, Terrains,& Objects:
Liquids: SpongeBob and Patrick can't swim (Ignoring the fact that this breaks all laws of reality), so avoid landing in liquids, or risk being sucked down under.
Sliding Slopes: When your character comes in contact with one of these, they will slide down it uncontrollably, going much faster than normally.
Teleport Boxes: To open these, just walk past them. Once two are open, jumping inside one will send your character to the other one's location.
Buttons: These mechanisms can do just about anything, such as providing platforms, opening doors, or even destroying things. Note, however, that some buttons can only be activated by a specific attack.
Various Platforms: These platforms can act as elevators or stepping stones, but beware! Some of them are trapdoors, and others collapse beneath your character's feet.
Checkpoints: Walk past these to activate them, so if your character "dies", they'll be "reborn" next to the nearest checkpoint.
Sticky Walls: When the wall jump sign appears, it means that SpongeBob may scale this wall with the "wall jump". Be aware, however, that some sticky walls may have electricity or spikes coming out of them.
Cracks: The walls and floors are hiding something. If cracks are seen, then that particular piece of wood or rock isn't what it claims to be. Break them down with SpongeBob or Patrick's special attacks to see what they hold.
Scenery Pieces: From barrels of flour to picnic tables to piles of skulls and bones, these objects are simply there to make the game look more "believable" and "realistic". Most of them can be destroyed, but it won't get you any manliness points.
Springboard: To activate these, just jump on them, and your character will be bounced at a certain angle to a certain platform.
Trampoline: Similar to Springboards, except that they bounce your character straight upward, instead of an angle.
Ice Cubes: Suspended in midair by balloons, these will allow Patrick to use his tongue as a grappling hook to swing across dangerous areas.
Doors & Gates: Connecting certain sections of the game, doors & gates can be opened by pressing buttons, completing tasks, or can even be broken down by special attacks.
Hiding Places: Not all enemies are in plain sight. From giant gumball machines to giant barrels of rum to mini-statues of Plankton's head, enemies lie in wait patiently, waiting to ambush your character.
Clam Communicator: Mindy the Mermaid, King Neptune's daughter, communicates to SpongeBob and Patrick through this magic mirror. The clam communicator is usually located at the start of each level, where Mindy gives SpongeBob and Patrick the overview of the level and present them with new attacks. To activate the clam communicator, press R1 on the gamepad.
Teleportation Platforms: These platforms are used to teleport SpongeBob or Patrick to alternate dimensions, where they can complete challenges for Goofy Goober Tokens. After these platforms are exited, everything "resettable" will be reset.
Slippery Terrains: Usually frozen surfaces, these areas can be treacherous, as on these surfaces your character will have a harder time moving in the directions you might wish. Also, tight turns are not handled so well either.
Port-O-Head: These portable potties allow much more than emptying bladders. When activated by the R1 button, they will switch SpongeBob to Patrick or vice-versa for challenges that only they can complete.
Sonic Wave Platforms: These platforms are only of use to SpongeBob. When he has acquired the Sonic Wave Guitar, he can use these platforms to amplify the guitar's sound waves and complete Sonic Wave Guitar challenges for a Goofy Goober Token.
Time Extension Rings: In driving, Spongeboard, and sonic wave challenges, these rings appear for the Patty Wagon, Spongeboard, or the sonic wave to go through. They disappear after a few seconds, however, so move fast!
Ramps: Only available on driving levels; ramps will allow the Patty Wagon to "fly" for a short amount of time.
Water: Found only on driving levels; water makes it harder to control the Patty Wagon until you get out of it.
Abyss: When your character drops into it, they will be "reborn" at the nearest checkpoint with everything reset.
Out-of-Bounds Hand: This hand (credited as "Hans" in "Suds") has only one purpose - to grab your character when they fall into an abyss.
Bash Symbol (a fist in a circle): When this symbol is present, it means that whatever object above it can only be activated by SpongeBob's Bash move.
Steam Vents: Spraying columns of steam that can deal damage to your character, some steam vents will blow steam in an on/off pattern, while others blow repeatedly and never stop. In the Spongeball challenges, Spongebob is not harmed by them in ball form, but he can still be "pushed around" by them.
Cacti & Hot Coals: These terrains act just like liquids, except SpongeBob and Patrick cannot drown in them.
Oil Slicks & Volcano Sauce: Found only on driving levels and spewed by mini oil towers & giant volcano sauce bottles, puddles of volcano sauce deal pure damage to the Patty Wagon, while oil slicks make the Patty Wagon spin out of control.
Throw Fruit: These watermelons exist only to be used by Patrick as ammunition for his throw move. However, throw fruit wilt quickly after being plucked, so throw them with caution. After a throw fruit is destroyed, another one immediately grows where it was plucked from.
Freezy Fruit: These special variations of the throw fruit are ice blocks growing out of the ground. When thrown onto liquid surfaces, they will freeze the liquid for about 18 seconds.
Paddlewheel: These mini-windmills can only be activated by Spongebob's Spongebowl move. When activated, they will rotate things in or out of place, such as springboards & rope bridges.
Minelayer: Minelayers act somewhat like cannons, firing out various things, some of which are aimed at your character. Some of them can be destroyed, while others are "indestructible".
Pressure Plate: Pressure plates act as switches that activate when an object heavier than air is placed on them. Pressure plates can remove barriers and reveal hidden platforms.
Sea Camel: Found only in the Great Trench, these monstrous serpents are startled by the Spongebowl technique, and once startled, they will swim across whatever body of liquids they are currently in, leaving small humps that Spongebob or Patrick can jump onto and use as bridges.
[edit] Trivia
- The people who made this game also worked on Battle for Bikini Bottom.
- In "The Thug Tug" Mindy can be heard saying Bad Word # 11
- In level 11, a bent-up license plate in the junk heap can be seen with HVY-IRN on it, an obvious reference to the production company, Heavy Iron Studios.
- In level 16, after the player jumps off of the large metal platforms over the pit of lava, a bucketheaded Sandy can clearly be seen running on a large hamster wheel.
