Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

It deals with the story of five children of a supernatural being, one of whom, Hern, becomes the first king of a united Dalemark. It is written in the form of two spellcoats woven by Hern's younger sister and the narrator of the story, Tanaqui. The coats tell the history of an invasion driven by the evil mage, Kankredin. In an afterword, it is explained how the coats were discovered in an archaeological dig sponsored by the Earl of Hannart from Cart and Cwidder and Drowned Ammet.
