The Smiley Morning Show is an award-winning radio program on radio station WZPL (99.5 FM - an Entercom Communications station) in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The show is hosted by 2006 NUVO magazine "Best Radio Personality"[1] Dave Smiley and is co-hosted by Kari "K.J." Johll. They are regularly joined by senior producer Brian Moore, aka "Bmoore" and producer Chris Van Sickle, aka "Weedman," along with "Traffic Goddess" Mindy Winkler and meteorologist Paul Poteet (of WRTV 6 fame)

The show is a talk/entertainment morning show that includes significant interaction with listeners. Each day, there are usually several guests on the show, including many comedians, A-list celeberties, and local personalities.

  • The Host and energy of the show, Smiley combines bumbling and often self-depricating radio antics with his skill as a disc jockey.
  • Originally from Pella, Iowa where he started in radio as a teen, Smiley moved to the Indianapolis area in May of 2002 after stints in New York, San Diego, California and Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Harbors a secret desire to one-up Ryan Seacrest of American Idol fame, as well as surpassing local radio super-stars Bob & Tom.
  • Sexual orientation and relationship status are a secret.
  • Prefers biting his toenails instead of clipping them.

  • Originally an unintended sidekick, Kari Johll now acts as the show's comedic straight-woman co-host. In addition to her straight-laced bantering, she handles the Hollywood News and "Top Three Things You Need To Know" news segments.
  • Also hosts a website and segment entitled "K.J.'s Strays", dedicated to helping stray cats.
  • K.J. hails from Wisconsin and is a fan of cheese and the Green Bay Packers.

  • Both spend considerable time on-air outside of reporting weather and traffic respectively.
  • Paul Poteet serves as a vast resource of musical knowledge and perpetual impressions of well-known DJ, Casey Kasem. He is a man women want and men want to be like. He can cut glass with a steely gaze.
  • Mindy Winkler collects a hate list of odd, and at times unbelievable, objects that are making her mad, not limited to Department Store Gift Cards, or items found in or along the side of the road. A few objects listed include:
    • cows lining up in one lane of highway
    • A Barbeque Grill
    • Duct Work
    • 36,000lbs. of chicken
    • couch
    • spilled shampoo/conditioner
    • peanut butter

Included in regular programming are various participation games for listeners (past and present both listed).

  • Fact or Bullcrap
    • Listeners call "fact" or "bullcrap" on trivia - get three out of five right to win a prize
  • All for the Nookie
    • Listeners convince their spouse to leave work and have sex - succeed for a prize
  • Gas or No Gas
  • Meal or No Meal
  • Battle of the Burbs
    • an epic battle pitting Indianapolis suburbs in a test of hometown trivia
  • Stop-a-Cop
    • listeners have to find a police officer, stop him, and get him on the phone with the station
  • Weigh-in-Wednesday
    • Smiley and Chris "Weedman" Van Sickle dieted for for a few months by counting calories and/or using diet pills.
      • Smiley invented the One Less Diet, a diet in which the person consumes one less drink, one less bite of food, one less slice of pizza - whatever they choose.
    • Smiley was forced to walk around a local lake wearing only his boxer shorts and a sandwich board sign while listeners threw tomatoes at him.
  • Listener Numbers
    • Listeners call in to receive an official listener number.
  • The Amazing Smiley
    • Listeners call in and honk their car horn. If Smiley fails to correctly guess the year, make and model of your car, the listener wins $100.
