[edit] Controversial Beginnings
The Shivers started out under the Whiskey & Apples label, with lead member Keith Zarriello proclaiming himself to be asexual and cripple. These charectaristics were part of a bigger political stance taken by Zarriello, officially known as the "Straightedge Antisexual/Antichildbirth" movement, which called for the immediate stop to all procreation. The movement focused on the arrogance of bringing up children in a world so full of suffering. The song which is most associated with this stage-act is "Antisexual/Antichildbirth", which he almost desperately added one other shocking thing, the use of the word "nigger". The use of this controversial deragotory statement went relatively unnoticed though, compared to the many people who were drawn to the song for its asexual nature. This led him to become the primary artist for the burgeoning asexual community, touring and proclaiming the virtues of this lifestyle.
[edit] First Recordings
Zarriello also began to focus on miming and farming, which eventually led to the inspiration for Charades, his first full length album. This record was a primarily lo-fi recording, with songs covering topics of loneliness, fringe lifestyles, and pain. The highly praised track entitled "Beauty", led to bigger labels taking interest. However Zarriello's highly unusual lifestyle made him hard to work with, and he again moved out to Canada to focus on farming.
[edit] New Life
While farming in Canada he somehow made a descent toward Washington, DC, where he again got inspired into new focuses of more political and serene of nature. He left Washington, DC to Austin, TX to record a very short-lengthed and crude album entitled the D.C. EP. Sometime during this he re-recorded "Antisexual/Antichildbirth" without the use of the word "nigger".
[edit] Critical Success
Zarriello's eccentric behavior continued to calm down and he was able to form an actual band, with actual members other then himself. His calmer behavior might be due to the hospitalization of his bandmate Joanne Schornikow. He also switched to a new label Outerbourough Records in which he is the only band represented. "Phone Calls" is an upcoming album soon to be released featuring the new members, which is rumoured to be filled with more ecletic styles, inspirations from the readings of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and a new more calm perspective in life. The Shivers have been able to get more mainstream attention through their review in Pitchfork Media.
