The Shadow of Courage is the third episode of season one of Courage the Cowardly Dog.

This is the first episode since The Chicken from Outer Space to be set in the farmhouse. It is about an old man who dies, and his shadow comes to life and terrorizes the farmhouse.

An evil old scientist dies, and his shadow comes to life, scaring the people of Nowhere, but it proves to be a coward itself when lightning scares it into the Bagge farmhouse. It terrifies Courage and mocks Eustace, Muriel being the only one oblivious to its presence. Courage discovers that it is an Evil Shadow that comes to life after evil people die. The Shadow appears to have captured Muriel, but after a confrontation in the basement, Courage discovers that this was a misconception. Courage finds that the Shadow is misjudged and wants to be a star, to have fame and glamour. Courage reasons with the Shadow, and the Shadow reforms, becoming the shadow of a real star in the sky.

  • This is the first appearance of the Computer.
  • First appearance of Basil, who appears in Courage's thought bubble, and one of the things Courage turns himself into. Basil is usually a minor background character, with the exception of his main appearance in Family Business.
  • This is the first episode with a friendly monster.
