Lupin III: The Secret of Twilight Gemini (ルパン三世 トワイライト☆ジェミニの秘密 Rupan Sansei: Towairaito Jeminī no Himitsu?) is a television special based on the Lupin III animated series. It premiered in Japan on August 2, 1996 on the Nippon Television Network and is produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. In North America, it is licensed by Funimation.
[edit] Summary
Don Dolune (voiced by Shuichiro Moriyama), a former associate of Arsene Lupin III (voiced by Kanichi Kurita), gives Lupin half of a diamond called the Twilight Gemini. By finding the other half of the diamond, it will allow Lupin to access a fantastic treasure. Lupin and Daisuke Jigen (voiced by Kiyoshi Kobayashi) travel to Morocco (with some interference from Inspector Koichi Zenigata (voiced by Goro Naya)).
The two find a great deal of civil unrest in Morocco as a tribe known as the Gelts are seeking to restore themselves to power. Things become complicated when Lupin falls for Lara (voiced by Aya Hisakawa), one of the Gelt leaders, and a group of assassins, headed by the twisted male whip-wielding Sadachiyo (voiced by Nachi Nozawa), wants the treasure of Twilight Gemini for itself.
[edit] Trivia
- This film by and far features the most fanservice of any Lupin film, with several scenes featuring Fujiko Mine topless, and a scene of a nude Lara bathing. Also, it's notable for being the only film with a Lupin/Fujiko sex scene that doesn't get interrupted on-camera. FUNimation created an edited version of the film because of these concerns, although the full uncut version was also made available. When FUNimation later re-released Twilight Gemini as part of the "First Haul" boxset, they accidentally issued it with the edited version. An uncut copy replacement was made available to those who had purchased the edited version, and the mistake was corrected in later releases.
- There has been some speculation in the fan community that Don Dolune may actually be Arsene Lupin, Lupin's grandfather. Dolune may be in fact a corrupted version of "Don Luis Peranna", an alias used by Arsene Lupin during his later adventures (813) and (Teeth of The Tiger).
- Guests in the Spanish dub include Pilar Escandon (Lara), Eduardo Tejedo (Don Dolune), and Mario Sauret (Sadachiyo).
