The Scenic Railway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scenic Railway is the United Kingdom's oldest surviving roller coaster, one of the attractions at Dreamland Margate in Kent. The ride was built in the 1920s, and still has a brakeman who controls the speed via a large lever controlled from his elevated seat. As of 2002 the ride was become a Grade II listed building the first amusement park attraction to achieve this status. Although one other ride the Aerial Glide at Shipley Glen, Yorkshire later also received this status, it later had the listing rescinded leaving the Scenic Railway as the only listed ride in the UK.
There is also a similar roller coaster (including a brakeman) with the same name at Luna Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The Luna Park Scenic Railway is also Heritage listed in Australia.
