"The Return" is the 37th episode of the American animated television series Ben 10. It aired on April 7, 2007.
[edit] Plot
At the dairy factory from "Under Wraps", the alien werewolf is searching for something. Making its way to the factory floor, it locates and digs up the alien mummy. The security guard follows, arriving just in time to see the pair vanish into thin air.
While the Tennyson's travel on a bridge near Cape Canaveral, they hear about a hijacked prison bus on the radio. Sure enough, the very same bus smashes into the RV. As Ben prepares to stop them, Grandpa Max insists on forming a plan. Ben assumes he can do it alone and tries to transform into Fourarms, only to get Stinkfly instead.
Ben goes with the change and begins to subdue the prisoners, ignoring Gwen and Max's efforts to help. The lack of coordination proves dangerous when Max attempts to pop the tires on the bus with a laser attached to the RV: Stinkfly's interference causes him to slice through the bridge instead, sending the bus plummeting towards the ocean below. Max is able to catch the bus with a grappling hook, but several prisoners fall into the water and attempt to swin away. Gwen stops them with a magic spell, creating water spouts beneath them.
While Gwen chides Ben about his lack of teamwork afterward, a news report announces that a recent space shuttle launch has been delayed by a strange purple lightning storm. Familiar with such an occurrence, they decide to investigate.
At NASA, a scientist named Doctor Victktor is explaining his improvements to the shuttle's engines, despite the fact that the mission has been grounded. When someone points this out, Vicktor wonders what gives him the authority to do so. The man identifies himself as the mission director. Vicktor simply replies "Of course" and walks off. Another scientist comments that Vicktor is brilliant, assuming it is the reason the director hired him, but the director doesn't remember hiring Vicktor at all.
After arriving at NASA, Max meets up with the mission director, having known him during his astronaut days. Max reveals that he would have been the first man on the moon were it not for other concerns. They run into Vicktor while talking. Vicktor seems to recognize the Omnitrix, then insists that tourists shouldn't be in a secure area. The director agrees, then suggests Max and the kids simply show themselves out instead of leading them. Left alone, they decide to explore instead.
While Gwen and Max review the flight logs, Ben decides to explore on his own without their knowledge. As Gwen and max run through the logs, they discover that Vicktor is responsible for the lightning. When pointing it out to Ben, they discover that Ben is missing.
Meanwhile, the director confronts Vicktor about his credentials, only to have the mummy tie him up. The werewolf is also there, and Vicktor orders it to take care of Ben. Ben runs into the werewolf shortly after, and attempts to use Heatblast to deal with it. He gets his version of the alien mummy instead (dubbed Benmummy in the credits). Though unfamiliar with the form, Ben quickly adapts and stalemates the werewolf, forcing it to retreat by creating an explosion.
Working their way to the source of lightning, the group ends up in NASA's "graveyard", a dumping ground for everything NASA no longer uses, they are confronted by the mummy and werewolf, which attack them without warning. Ben attempts to use Fourarms once again, but becomes Cannonbolt instead. Cannonbolt quickly takes out the aliens, but is shocked by purple lightning. The source is Vicktor, who transforms into a alien reminiscent of Frankenstein's monster. Now that it's three to one, Gwen uses another spell to create a large metal snake. Vicktor's electricity easily repels the creation, collapsing a tower on top of Cannonbolt, Gwen, and Max. Not willing to waste time making sure they killed the trio, Vicktor has his minions prepare for the launch.
Emerging from the rubble, Cannonbolt pulls out Gwen and Max before reverting back to Ben. Max assumes that Vicktor plans to launch the shuttle with the corrodium on-board. Max and Gwen go to check out the shuttle while Ben tracks Vicktor. Ben finds Vicktor and the werewolf inside one of the wrecks in the graveyard. Vicktor teleports the werewolf back to New Mexico, apparently needing the transmitter it constructed in "Benwolf".
Meanwhile, Gwen and Max make their way to the shuttle. Assuming the corrodium is already on board, Gwen and Max put on HAZMAT suits. They find no one guarding the shuttle, unaware that the mummy has already tied them up and boarded the shuttle.
Ben attempts to use XLR8 to catch Vicktor by surprise, but Vicktor's reflexes allows him to bat XLR8 away with ease. Using the teleporter again, Vicktor tries to teleport XLR8 to an arctic region. XLR8 tosses a piece of machinery into the portal to close it before he falls in. With the distraction, however, Vicktor is able to launch the shuttle. Gwen and Max have boarded the shuttle by this point, so they are launched into space with it.
XLR8 claims that Vicktor's plan is over, but Vicktor claims that it is not his plan. Rather, it is his master's. Charging up more electricity, Vicktor begins to power a device surrounding a large piece of a building. It is none other than the tower which Ben defeated Ghostfreak in. The electricity draws the ash which Ghostfreak was reduced to back together, restoring him to life. XLR8 reverts back to Ben at the same moment, just in time for Ghostfreak to announce that they have a score to settle.
[edit] Notes
- This episode aired in the UK on March 31, 2007.
- Michael Dorn, who voices Doctor Vicktor, also portrayed Coldstone, a cyborg Frankenstein being in Gargoyles.
- This episode is the second where Gwen performs magic; the results are decidedly better than in "Under Wraps".
- It's revealed that Max was among the astronauts in the US Space Program, and was almost the first man to walk on the moon. He opted to join the Plumbers instead.
- This is the first episode Ben uses Benmummy (named in the credits) since he acquired the form in "Under Wraps".
- This is the first two-part episode.
- Doctor Vicktor is a play on Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who created Frankenstein's monster.
- When Ben accidentally turns into Cannonbolt, he complains, "Oh man! What does it have against Fourarms?", pointing out the Omnitrix's habit of changing Ben into aliens other than Fourarms.
