[edit] Introduction

The Residence Hall Association at Florida Institute of Technology, also known as Florida Tech RHA, is a Florida Association of Residence Halls affiliated student-run organization.

[edit] Objectives of RHA[1]

  • To serve as a liaison between the residents of campus housing and the Office of Residence Life.
  • To work with the Office of Residence Life with resident students and Resident Assistants (RA), and the Resident Directors (RD) to assess the needs of the student residents and develop creative programs to meet those needs.
  • To develop a sense of community among the resident students as well as other members of the Florida Institute of Technology.
  • To act as a voice for the residents in campus housing on topics including, but not limited to: dining services, housing concerns and issues, residence hall maintenance, and public safety.
  • To discuss, evaluate, and make recommendations on matters of policy to the Office of Residence Life, the Dean of Students, and the Vice Provost of Student Affairs.
  • To provide students experience in the democratic process and in exercising the responsibilities of citizenship:
    • Responsibility to be informed
    • Responsibility not only to voice their opinions and ideas, but to explore their validity
    • Responsibility of concern for their fellow students

The organization has active attendance of approximately 50 on-campus and off-campus students, consisting of residence hall representatives who represent and speak for over 1300 on-campus students living in Florida Institute of Technology residence halls.

The Policy Handbook of RHA states that "(membership) is automatic for all Florida Institute of Technology students living in onā€campus housing, including the residence halls and campus apartments, during the semester of intended participation within the organization."[2] Thus, by definition, RHA is the largest student organization in Florida Tech.

[edit] History

The history of the Florida Tech RHA is unknown. There is evidence that the organization may have started back as early as 1995, as Florida Tech hosted the 1995 Florida Association of Residence Halls conference. However, history of RHA between 1995 and 2001 are not found, suggesting that the organization may have stopped operation until its re-founding in 2001 by Michael Green.

The Residence Hall Association was commended by the Office of Student Life by being award "The Rising Star Student Organization" in 2003.
