Confessions Tour (2006) |
Re-Invention Tour was a seven-country concert tour starting in May 2004 which featured music from the beginning of her career to her 2003 album American Life.
Madonna visited a total of seven countries, and 20 cities, selling out 55 of 56 shows (at Slane Castle she attracted 76,275 fans with 80,000 tickets available) where she was seen by an estimated 880,000 fans. The tour is considered the most successful and highest grossing concert tour of the year, with an estimated gross of $125.5 million. To acknowledge her achievement of the tour success in that year, Billboard Magazine awarded Madonna Backstage Pass Award in recognition of having the top tour of the year 2004. [1]
The tour was chronicled in I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, a two-hour documentary which included taped segments of the show, and backstage elements, including the auditioning of some of Madonna's dancers. A DVD, with a bonus CD of selected songs from the set, was released June 20, 2006.

[edit] Information
The show was divided into five acts with different themes: Renaissance, military, jazz/circus, acoustic/religious and tribal/Scottish. "Nothing Really Matters" was meant to be part of the opening scene, following "Nobody Knows Me". The song itself was eventually scrapped, though elements of the intended choreography would eventually find its way into the show via "Nobody Knows Me". "Dress You Up", "Love Profusion" and "I'm So Stupid" were all part of the setlist. "I'm So Stupid " was cut for time constraints. Madonna had difficulty learning the guitar chords for "Dress You Up" so it was replaced with "Material Girl". An acoustic version of "Love Profusion" was meant to be interchanged with "Nothing Fails" during some of the European shows, but it never happened. At least one song from every album Madonna released was in the setlist. Madonna's performance of John Lennon's classic pro-peace song "Imagine" was a surprise to many fans and critics. Asked why she chose to cover this song Madonna simply said: "I wanted to make a statement with the ultimate peace song."
Madonna did not play any Friday night gigs on this tour as the teaching of the Kabbalah forbids it. She also pledged to respect the Jewish practice of Shabbat by dining with her close family every Friday rather than working.
During the end-segment while performing "Papa Don't Preach" and "Crazy For You", Madonna wore black t-shirts with various "... do it better" lines, (reminiscent of her 1986 "Papa Don't Preach" music video). The lines read on various shows:
- Kabbalists Do It Better
- Midwesterners Do It Better
- Italians Do It Better
- Brits Do It Better
- Irish Do It Better
For a few of her shows in the United States, she wore a t-shirt which read "Vote Or Die", addressing the then-upcoming U.S. presidential election.
The stage for the show had a huge structure with big screens that move around the stage, a number of elevators, a huge platform in V shape that was attached to the main stage in two songs, a conveyor belt, raising plataforms and a revolving stage.
[edit] The Show
The show begins with a video introduction, The Beast Within. Madonna is not seen on stage the whole time. As the opening of Vogue begins, Madonna rises up on a platform to perform the songs. She shows off her cardio and yoga positions while performing. The next song, Nobody Knows Me shows Madonna walking on a conveyor belt. Madonna then rests to sing Frozen before exiting the stage. After a break, American Life is shown with military dancers training on stage. Madonna then does a "gun dance" for Express Yourself, before playing the guitar for Burning Up and Material Girl. The second act ends. Soon, a remix to Madonna's Hollywood begins playing as a video interlude. Madonna then comes out to sing Hanky Panky. She then does a slow jazz version of Deeper and Deeper before ending the circus segment with Die Another Day and Evita's Lament. Before the next segment start a video interlude of a remix of Bedtime Story is shown. Madonna then rises up to sing Nothing Fails and Don't Tell Me as an introduction to the acoustic act. She then sings Like A Prayer before slowing things down with a medley of Mother and Father and Intervention. She closes the segment with John Lennon's Imagine. Madonna ends the show with a tribal act, with a bagpipe player coming out before going Into The Groove. Madonna then sings Papa Don't Preach and Crazy For You as tributes to the fans before ending with Music and Holiday.

[edit] 'Re-inventions'
The theme of this tour was Madonna 're-inventing' her past material. This involved re-interpreting songs, modernising them or simply performing them with a different instrument. And according to Madonna, give them a new meaning. The following songs were 're-invented' for the tour;
- The remix of "Justify My Love", "The Beast Within", took also a few elements from "Erotica" and a few lines from the original version were scrapped out.
- "Vogue" was performed with an 18th-century/Bohemian theme, re-inventing the notable "Vogue" performance at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards".
- "Nobody Knows Me" became more upbeat and dance.
- Few changes were made in "Frozen".
- "American Life" became a rock song.
- "Express Yourself" was updated and given a patriotic love theme.
- "Burning Up", one of Madonna's early discotheque hits, was performed by mainly on an electric guitar and involved no dancing. "Material Girl" was also performed in this style.
- "Hollywood" was completely remixed as a dancers interlude.
- "Hanky Panky" stayed mostly intact, a few lines were taken and a longer instrumental part were placed.
- "Deeper and Deeper" was performed in a burlesque, jazzy style, to fit with the circus-themed stage. The song is originally a dance track.
- To "Die Another Day" was given a longer instrumental part for the dance numbers.
- A piano were introduced to the instrumentation of "Lament".
- A reworked version of the Orbital remix of "Bedtime Story" was shown as a video interlude.
- An almost identical version of "Nothing Fails" were performed but without the gospel chorus.
- "Don't Tell Me", originally a lively dance track, was performed more slowly and with a sample of Bitter Sweet Symphony in some tour dates.
- Acoustic versions of "Like a prayer" and "Mother and Father" with medley "Intervention" were performed.
- "Imagine" is essentially a re-invention of the John Lennon original.
- "Into The Groove" is updated and features Missy Elliot.
- "Papa Don't Preach", "Crazy For You" and "Music" received minimal changes.
- "Holiday" was also updated and became very different from the original one.

[edit] Trivia
- While the tour was being produced the chosen name was "The Whore of Babylon Tour", but allegedly Guy Ritchie persuaded Madonna to change it to The Re-Invention Tour. Other names considered were "Ground Zero" and "Nobody Knows Me".
- On April 22, 2003, during the taping of MTV's "Madonna: Live & On The Record", Mega-Fan Tom Zaremba suggested to Madonna to perform "Burning Up" on guitar to which she would later abide. This was confirmed by Liz Rosenberg in ICON Fan Magazine Q&A and by Madonna herself at Borders NYC book signing for Lotsa de Casha in June 2005.
- During the tour Elton John query lip-sync on her concerts,“Since when has lip-synching been live?” he said. “Anyone who lip-syncs in public onstage when you pay 75 pounds ($134) to see them should be shot. That’s me off her ... Christmas card list,” he added. “But do I give a toss? No.” Madonna’s spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, rejected John’s allegations.“Madonna does not lip-sync nor does she spend her time trashing other artists,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She sang every note of her Re-Invention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work. Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice ... or naughty,” she said.
- The Re-Invention Tour is the most representative of Madonna's career, containing at least one song from twelve albums. American Life is obviously the featured album with seven songs on the setlist (Nobody Knows Me, American Life, Hollywood, Die Another Day, Nothing Fails, Mother and Father, and Intervention). The second most represented is The Immaculate Collection with three songs (Justify My Love in The Beast Within, Into The Groove, and Crazy For You). Two songs are represented from five albums: I'm Breathless (Vogue and Hanky Panky), Like A Prayer (Express Yourself and Like a Prayer), Madonna (Burning Up and Holiday), Erotica (Erotica in The Beast Within and Deeper and Deeper), and Music (Music and Don't Tell Me). One song from five other albums are represented on the setlist, including Ray Of Light (Frozen), Like A Virgin (Material Girl), Evita (Lament), Bedtime Stories (Bedtime Story), and True Blue (Papa Don't Preach).
[edit] DVD Release
The show was expected to be broadcasted on CBS. The show was taped on the final night in Lisbon. The special event was eventually scrapped, mostly because of Madonna's demands of having commercial free time and over two hours of footage. Fans still await a DVD release, although none has been released. I'm Going To Tell You A Secret a live album and some concert footage has been released, but the footage was taken from a Paris, France concert.
