Directed by Sidney Gilliat from a screen play by Frank Launder & Gilliat, The Rake's Progress was a black & white film made in Britain in 1945. The production designer was David Rawnsley and the incidental music was composed by William Alwyn.

Ihe plot follows the career of an upper class cad. He is sent down from Oxford University for placing a chamber pot on the Martyrs' Memorial. Sent to South America, he rebels against palntation life becoming eventually a car racing driver. From here he [[descends to a life of woman-chaseing & drunkenness which causes the death of his father. The plot diverges from the theme of The Rake's Progress paintings by having him redeem hiimself by a hero's death in World War II.
