The Prince Sketch

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prince Sketch is one of the more popular sketches to be born of Chappelle's Show.

It is one of the two aired recollections (another, though featuring only Murphy's recalling of the events, is on the Season 2 DVD) of Charlie Murphy in his True Hollywood Series, and is second in popularity to the Chappelle's Show's flagship skit The Rick James Sketch.

Prince is too played by Chappelle, as was Rick James. The real Prince is absent from the sketch, the other crew members of the show on the set don't speak, and the Robot dance is done for the first time on the show by Karl Lake.

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

As with The Rick James Sketch, Charlie Murphy is introduced to be telling the entire truth about the encounter with Prince.

Charlie made a small humorous comment about Los Angeles natives during the 1980s, and their choice of weird attire, and it was followed up by Karl Lake doing the Robot for the first time on the show.

Murphy also comments about how during the 1980s, the most effeminate looking men seemed to attract all of the women. This comment was supplemented by a shot of another one of the club's male patrons talking to two women while he himself was laden with rouge and eyeshadow. This comment was completed when Prince himself walked into the club accompanied by his entourage from Shalamar, which included Mickey Free, a man who too looked like a woman (while garnering the sly comments of those men who were unaware of the fact).

Charlie notices Prince walk in as he's dancing and watches him approach his brother. Prince offers to have him and his crew at his house, and they retreat there.

The party is nice enough as those there lounge around. Music is playing, and it's pretty nice. Suddenly, Prince, after voicing his boredom, asks "Is anyone up for a game of basketball?", to which Charlie and his crew break into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. He challenges Murphy and his friends to play him and the Revolution, his group of friends. Again, Murphy and his friends burst into laughter.

They are offered clothes to change into, and as they await, Murphy mentions that instead of changing, Prince and his friends played in the exact same clothes they wore in the club. The audience sees this as they emerge from the fog. Charlie comments "You know what we're gonna call this? The shirts against the blouses.", in reference to Prince's feminine looking shirt and outfit in general. Prince gets angry, and the game starts.

Ironically, Prince's effeminate looks say nothing about his ballplaying ability, as when the game first begins, he crosses up Charlie, causing him to fall flat on his face.

From there, the game is a landslide victory, in Murphy's own words, for Prince, who even goes as far as slam dunk the game winning point.

In the end, Murphy and his gang are served pancakes, while also being degraded for their apparent lack of skill in basketball.

Charlie then dares the audience to challenge Prince to a game of basketball to see if he was lying or not.
