The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers (formed 2003) is a band from Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Their music has been compared to Radiohead, John Vanderslice, Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, and Pedro the Lion, among others[citation needed]. The Prayers toured with the Mountain Goats through March and April 2005, and are planning a follow-up tour in October.
Their name is an amalgam of John D. Caputo's book The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida and an obscure character from The Big Lebowski. According to vocalist Perry Wright, "The name was a joke, since I put it together at a time when rock band names were undergoing a kind of renaissance back to the classic names like 'The Somethings'. This was my way of being 'The Somethings' while making fun of it at the same time."[1]
