The Porkers

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Porkers (formerly the Pork Hunts) may well be Australia's most well-known and long-standing Ska revival band. In their 20th year they are currently supported by Sound System Records. Pete Cooper and his rude boy mate Sean started the 2 Tone-influenced band in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1985. Although neither of them could play an instrument, they found musicians to back their singing and dancing show. Two years later, the Pork Hunts were set to play their first concert, although Sean had left the band by then to pursue a career as a lighting technician.

Some skinhead friends were set to have a house demolishing party at the same time, because their rental property was earmarked for development. To coincide with a local international surfing event, Surf Fest, a party was held on a Saturday in November, 1987 — in the beachside suburb of Bar Beach, New South Wales.

The party went amazingly well, with much drinking and dancing taking place, very few injuries (except for the head-banger who let loose with a bottle of tomato sauce in the kitchen), and a great after party bonfire on the beach with various parts of the house.

'Ska Fest' was born!

Everyone had such a good time at the party, the Pork Hunts were encouraged to do another gig, and then another, by the fourth gig, Rodney 'Rocket' Palmer had taken over the beating of the drums.

Soon the 'Hunts were playing far and wide with word spreading of their energetic live show. In 1990, it was time for a name change, with the one club in Newcastle that they regularly played at closing its doors out of necessity and a record in the offering; they became The Porkers.

The road since then has been long and winding, with lots of great and other stupid things happening, and many line-up changes.

But 2007 sees the Porkers celebrating 20 years as Australia's hardest working ska core band!
