[edit] Plot summary
In this story, John Paul is five, and is interviewed by two International Fleet officers, who believe he is exceptionally intelligent. It tells of the struggle of his family, with many other Catholic Poles, in resisting the Hegemon's population control rules. Eventually, he agrees to go with them to Battle School, if he can have his family moved to the USA and promoted back to normal, compliant status.
Of course, he has no intention of going to Battle School, but they believe he will have children just in time to save the world from the Formics.
This story contains younger versions of important characters in the Enderverse, such as Hyrum Graff and Admiral Chamrajnagar.
