The Podge and Rodge Show (also known as The Podge and Rodge Show with Lucy Kennedy) is an Irish television show, broadcast and produced by RTÉ, featuring the two puppets Podge and Rodge as the hosts of the chatshow, with Lucy Kennedy as a co-host. It currently airs every Monday and Tuesday at 22:50 on RTÉ Two.[citation needed]

The show takes place in the fictional Ballydung Manor, a joke at Irish town names that begin with 'Bally-' (eg. Ballymena, Ballyhaunis or -most likely- Ballymun ). Another place mentioned is the "Stickitt Inn", thought to be in Ballydung.

It features celebrity interviews of a humorous nature and other humorous elements such as quizzes and racenights including hamsters in mazes and sheep shearing.[citation needed]

When the credits rolled, it would be common for the two to tell viewers to direct their complaints elsewhere, e.g. The Joe Duffy Show.

The show has been a phemomonal ratings success, regularly getting over 400,000 viewers a show[citation needed], peaking at 440,000 for the week beginning April 9, 2006. It regularly has more viewers than Desperate Housewives and Lostcn, both of which are also shown on RTÉ Two. It is catching up to RTÉ's flagship show—The Late Late Show—which airs on Friday nights on RTÉ One, and has approximately half a million viewers.

Following on from the success of their show, Podge and Rodge were asked to appear in a number of television ads for RTÉ which encouraged viewers to pay their television licences. They were also featured in a radio ad for Will Leahy's The Saturday Show on 2fm, in which they described the show as better than "shit on a stick".[citation needed]

[edit] First series

A pilot episode entitled An Audience with Podge and Rodge was broadcast on RTÉ on St. Stephen's Day in 2005. The series began in earnest on 6 February 2006.

Foster and Allen were among the guests on the first series. Podge and Rodge had previously mimicked them on their show A Scare at Bedtime with Podge and Rodge. Their characters are called "Fester and Ailin'" and have been seen on Irish television satirically arguing with Foster and Allen, with each claiming the other copied their act. Fester states: "Ailin' here came out of the womb with that accordion on him". Fester and Ailin' also claim that Foster and Allen's song "Bunch of Thyme" was in fact a stolen copy of their original work "Bunch of Lesbians". Fester and Ailin's other songs include "Tropical Diseases", "The Monkey Song" and "Doing the Wife's Sisters on the Sly" as well as the classic yuletide number "Dead Man Up The Chimney".

When Ireland's Eurovision representatives Donna and Joseph McCaul were invited onto the show, they were asked to sing their lastest single. No sooner had they begun than the nasty duo went for an ad break only to come back as the song was ending, with the McCauls unaware of what had happened. On a later episode, Lucy insisted they show a recorded version of the performance, only to find Rodge had recorded lesbian kissing scenes over the tape.

Tom Dunne was mocked for his lack of chart success with band Something Happens. Then in true Podge and Rodge style he was ridiculed with past clips of him sporting a bad hairstyle.

The series may best be remembered for Podge and Rodge's lustful fascination with Áine Chambers who they discovered online at www.sligozone.net and later invited on the show as a guest. She partook in a Blind Date spoof in which she was asked to choose between the two to take on a date.

A feature introduced in the first series was Rodge's Wrister Wreview. It involved various items, such as books, magazines and television shows receiving the expert opinion of Rodge. The items were rated on the Wrister Scale which was displayed on the screen.

Never to be accused of ignoring current affairs, the duo aired their views on the naked calendar craze that was sweeping the world and even did their bit to help out when Ireland was faced by fears of a bird-flu pandemic; they decided to 'kill' The Late Late Show owl. After spending much time taking aim, they eventually shot him to pieces. Also in current affairs they found time to discuss the SSIAs, taking digs at Eddie Hobbs, Pat Kenny and The Late Late Show along the way.

Johnny Vegas appeared as the last guest on the final show of the first series which was broadcast on 2 May 2006. His memorable interview involved him rambling on and on while Podge and Rodge watched on in disbelief.

[edit] Second series

The second series began on October 16, 2006 with an appearance by Big Brother contestant Spiral. Lucy revealed that she had been busy studying online over the summer and was now a fully qualified Sex Learning and Utopian Therapist (SLUT). She went out on the streets of Ireland to find out people's knowledge of all matters sexual. Later in the same episode, she set off in search of Mr. Ireland.

A feature that first appeared in this series was Ballydung Idol which featured spoofs of famous songs including "David Hasselhoff" (The Irish Hoff) performing "Jump in My Car" with "Pamela Anderson". Others to feature included the Singing Brickie, Richie Kavanagh, Bernard McHugh and Mary Harness (who performed Wuthering Heights). When the performance had reached a sufficient level of "crapiness" a fart sound erupted to halt proceedings. The level of "crap" was measured on a crapometer which Richie Kavanagh won with one minute and fifty-five seconds.

In the third series Lucy encountered a rather disgruntled student on her travels.

Winning Streak (a parody on the RTÉ produced gameshow of the same name) invited streakers to film their exploits and send them into the show with extra points being awarded for things such as more daylight and public streaking.

Miss Ballydung was a beauty contest of sorts; a cross between Miss World and The Rose of Tralee. It featured such beauties as Miss Muck, Miss Poledance Fitness and Miss Muff. Queen of the Land bottle-fed a lamb as Podge and Rodge made references to its imminent digestion by a hungry human. The final was held on the Monday 18 December 2006 episode, judged by The Rose of Tralee Catherine Feeney as well as that evening's guests Brendan Bowyer and Des Bishop. The winner was Miss Poledance Fitness (from Newry).

Episode fifteen of this series, broadcast on 4 December 2006, was billed as The Sex-Toy Show, a reference to the popular annual Irish television tradition The Late Late Toy Show which had been broadcast three days earlier. Lucy and the boys were joined by a team of sexperts who unveiled some of the best selling sex-toys on the market. The guests were asked to demonstrate a number of adult toys which jokingly included an inflatable Pat Kenny. Patrick Kielty was surprised to find himself locked in a cage as the credits rolled. An "apology" was issued on the following night's show.

In continuing with their trend of inviting weathermen onto the show, Daithí Ó Sé made an appearance. He was asked to present the weather while taking part in an Evil Circus.

Brian Kennedy was the latest in along line of Eurovision representatives that had been on the show, following on from the likes of Mickey Joe Harte, Dickie Rock, the McCauls and J-Lo. Therefore Podge and Rodge took the liberty of deciding not to mention the Eurovision for the entire interview.

Aslan's Christy Dignam had his hand gestures made fun of with Podge asking him if he'd ever considered presenting the News For The Deaf. He spoke of his time in Thailand with Buddhist monks. Podge and Rodge reflected on newpaper headlines including the one which heralded the band's supposed "split" and "Christy Dignam Dead!", a case of mistaken identity that even Gerry Ryan fell for.

Innuendo was again a common feature in each episode including references to places such as Wank, a mountain in Bavaria and the village of Fucking, near Salzburg in Austria. When Dara O'Briain appeared on the show as a guest he pointed out that he had asked the duo to appear on his show The Panel at a time when nobody else in RTÉ would give them a chance and that they had the cheek to now have 100,000 more viewers. Podge responded by pointing out that the correct figure was 250,000.

Ray D'Arcy was another face from the past to feature in the second series. Darcy, now a popular DJ on Irish radio, used to present children's television show The Den on which Podge and eventually Rodge made their first television appearances.

The duo gave their own version of The Late Late Show intrusion when comedian Paddy Courtney interrupted them as they broadcast one episode, shouting foul-mouthed obscenities which resulted in the screen switching to the show logo. The show continued as Podge promptly pulled out a gun, a fake gunshot was heard and the man was next seen lying flat on the floor as if dead.

Shitty Santas was a countdown of the five worst Irish television santas. Number one was Sean Moncrieff who was then interviewed by the duo who dubbed him as "one of the six bald broadcasters of Ireland". (Dara Ó Briain, Mark Cagney, Ray Shah, and Anthony Murnane being the others.) Colin Carroll discussed the sport of elephant-polo of which he helped Ireland win the World Championship. He attempted to break a world record; the fastest time to eat three crackers. The world record was fifty seconds but Carroll only managed fifty-nine seconds before spitting the third cracker over Podge and Rodge.

Brendan Bowyer, famous for his number one hit "The Hucklebuck", was informed by the twosome that his famous song also happened to be a sexual position. They poked fun at him for being mistaken for Richie Kavanagh and when they entered him in their online celebometer they laughed as they were proved right; he was 73% Richie Kavanagh. Later in the same episode, while interviewing Des Bishop, a clip was shown of the comedian appearing on A Scare at Bedtime.

[edit] Christmas special

Podge and Rodge hosted a special show from Ballydung Manor on December 19, entitled A Frightmare Before Christmas. It celebrated Christmas from their perspective, a reality where none of the intended guests turned up, and imaginary scenarios where the worst possible guests did. In reality Podge and Rodge and Lucy were left in the darkness of Ballydung Manor as the thunder raged outside, imagining their nightmare guests.

Lucy dreamed of interviewing June Rodgers and lo and behold a flashback occurred featuring June being interviewed by the two. In the "imaginary" interview, for which the brothers wore matching aran sweaters and Podge wore a Santa hat with "ho ho ho" emblazened on it, they made fun of her name by suggesting it had hidden pornographic innuendos. At the end of the flashback, the studio was still empty, leading Lucy to fill time by showing a special report of her interviewing people on the streets and asking them such questions as "When do you empty your sack?".

Podge then revealed his nightmare guest would be George Murphy, and in his imaginary interview an old tape was unearthed of him embarrassing himself on You're A Star. The interview was broken up by a return to reality whereby Podge had fallen asleep out of boredom.

In the second half of the show Lucy revealed the reason for the lack of guests; a plague of locusts was flocking towards the Ballydung bypass and Colin Farrell was being held up in a Moscow phone booth. Rodge's nightmare guest was revealed to be Shane MacGowan whom Rodge asked had he sold his soul to Satan. They showed him what he would look like if he had plastic surgery (including face liposuction and €3000 teeth) before comparing his new appearance to that of Christy Dignam. Podge and Rodge joined George Murphy to sing out the show with The Irish Rover.

[edit] New Year's Eve special

Podge and Rodge rang in 2007 on 31 December in a special programme lasting over forty minutes instead of the usual thirty-minute format. The New Year's Eve show was called Bogmanay (a play on Hogmanay). It was broadcast on RTÉ Two from 11.30p.m.

The boys dressed up for the occasion, presenting the show in white shirts, black jackets and bowties. The audience wore party hats.

Guests included Edele and Keavy Lynch of B*Witched fame, Mary Black, Jason Donovan and Freddie Starr returned as the Ballydung Butler for the evening. He was expected to do the brothers' bidding, serve the guests and make the tea.

While being interviewed, one of the Lynch sisters made a tentative movement toward a plate of what she presumed to be turkey covered by tinfoil on the table in front of her. Podge and Rodge warned that it had been there since Christmas a week previously and informed her that it was in fact badger meat. Having finished the interview, they took what was to be the first look of many at how the New Year festivities were going over on RTÉ One. However it was quite clear they were not going to plan as a shot of the exterior of the studio where the night was being filmed showed a mysterious man scurrying away into the darkness. Podge and Rodge assumed he was fed up and had left out of boredom.

Then Jason Donovan was quizzed. He appeared to be confused about what was going on and was further astounded when Freddie interrupted proceedings with a tray of tea and biscuits and gave him a passionate kiss.

Then Lucy and Freddie, relaxing on armchairs in a separate room, flicked over to RTÉ One revealing what appeared to be a gala night presented by Mike Murphy. The footage of a team of synchronised dancers appeared to have been taken from the RTÉ archives. Podge or Rodge could be heard in the background yelling at Freddie to get up and do what he had been paid to do. Then it cut to a commercial break with the two telling viewers to "join us after the break for more bum-blistering Bogmanay bullshit".

Podge and Rodge also looked back at some of the highlights of their year, handing out their very own Feckin' Eejit of the Year Awards (FEEJITs) to celebrate the great tradition of Irish Feckin' Eejitry. There were nine nominees chosen from the worlds of TV, entertainment, sport and politics. They were revealed individually at various points in the show, in the following order: Twink for her famous "zip up yer mickey" line, chef Richard Corrigan for moaning about the quality of chicken on The Late Late Show, jockey Paul O' Neill for being captured on camera headbutting his own horse City Affair after it failed to win a race, Johnny Logan for his "rap" of Hold Me Now, broadcaster Pat Kenny for the incident in which he was called a "piece of shit" live on air and U2 frontman Bono for his legal battle to win back his stetson and his trousers from his former stylist. The winner of the "prestigious" award was Late Late Show host Pat "Thank you very much for calling me a feckin arsehole" Kenny for "boring us to sleep every Friday night". (Podge)

Podge and Rodge were in awe of Mary Black.

Mary Black was the final person to be interviewed as time ticked away. The brothers expressed their delight at having her, after previously telling her sister Frances on the show that they saw her as their ideal guest.

With midnight approaching, it was time for the countdown which involved some scantily clad male strippers in leather turning their backs to reveal the numbers on their buttocks. Podge and Rodge blamed this one on Lucy. Freddie then asked for his wage but Podge and Rodge worked out that he actually owed them over €1000!

With that, the show was sung out by country crooner "Daniel O'Donnell" and his hit "I Wanna Dance With You", leading to the presenters, guests and strippers to dance with each other. Freddie Starr could be seen dancing with Lucy Kennedy, Jason Donovan and "Daniel O'Donnell" himself. Podge and Rodge placed their arms around each other and danced, only stopping when the camera continued to repeatedly focus on them.

[edit] Third series

Podge and Rodge return.

The third series began on February 5 2007. According to the official website, there "will be the usual mix of D to Z list celebrities along with some of Ireland's most entertaining tribute acts". There is a new feature Gifted or Afflicted and a new celebrity game; The Sheep Shagger Challenge in which Bernie the Sheep is ridden by a celebrity each week (Joe Rooney, scoring 19 seconds, described himself after his experience as being "slightly aroused" , George McMahon ["Mongo off Fair City"] scored a record 45 seconds and Joseph McCaul managed 24 seconds after being told to "imagine it's your cousin"). Podge and Rodge will also be hoping to find The Podge & Rodge Show's Perfect Couple 2007 in "The Ring Or The Finger".

A new section of the show is ShamRock, which has included tribute acts to some of the world's best known bands; including The Red Hot Chili Feckers and Metallic Kitten. The Chili Feckers received a total of 10, 10 and 2 leaving them top of the ShamRock chart. Metallic Kitten received 8, 7 and 1 (from Podge and Rodge "if there was a half, we'd have given you a half"). One of the acts that was cancelled was The Police tribute act ("simply for lack of imagination") called The Gardaí.

Comedian Joe Rooney, star of Father Ted and Killinaskully was the very first guest of the third series, followed by John McCririck ("half-man, half-sideburn").

In the third episode, IFTA fever was gripping the country and Podge and Rodge expressed their delight at not winning in their nominated category for Best Entertainment Show. They lost out to Naked Camera and showed Colin Murphy's look of disgust at also failing to win. According to Rodge, the IFTA award itself wasn't that classy and he compared it to "a cyborg with scoliosis". Podge then announced his preference for a STIFFY (an adult entertainment award) over an IFFY. They greeted first guest of the night, Arthur Murphy, host of Eighties show 'Mailbag' by asking: "How's your sack?" Second guest, Jason Byrne, described Ballydung Manor as "a proper shithole!" On Jason's Royal Variety Performance, Podge asked: "Did you drag Camilla around and stick her in a cardboard box?" They ridiculed him for his appearance on The Weakest Link when he thought the author J. R. R. Tolkien's surname was Ewing.

In the fourth episode, "comedian" Frank Carson appeared and Podge and Rodge were extremely unimpressed by his "jokes".

In the fifth episode, the duo poked fun at the latest Irish Eurovision entry, comparing Dervish to "maudlin auld shite" singing about the revolution of "Czechiliovakia". They retorted that Brian Kennedy, the previous year's entry, had been "tied to a tree" all year. They then went to say that there wasn't much to be looking forward to these days, with the Irish football team "playing shite" and Croke Park being "overrun by West Brits". Jayne Middlemiss was openly shocked when topless pictures of her as a 19-year-old were shown. Podge and Rodge described "Miss Middlemiss's" fellow Celebrity Love Island contestant, Fran Cosgrave as a "6-foot fanny head".

Sheana Keane from The Afternoon Show was the first guest of the sixth episode and, as they had previously told co-presenters Anna Nolan and Blathnáid Ní Chofaigh, Podge and Rodge reminded viewers that it is "the best show to watch in the afternoon with your trousers down". They also wondered "did they ever find out what happened to Marty's hair?". "Astrological giant" Russell Grant also made an appearance.

Russell Grant appears in Episode 6.

Episode seven's first guest, football manager Mick O'Dwyer, was asked: "What's it like being called a legend when you're not even dead?" "Peter O'Toole and Michael Collins didn't die in the GPO in 1916 for nothing!..." was Podge's comic reaction to the GAA allowing foreign games to be played in Croke Park. "What did the Kerryman with two left feet do? Why do Kerry dogs have flat faces?" were amongst the questions posed by Podge and Rodge in a general knowledge quiz. When second guest David Mitchell informed the viewers he had been on Fair City for 14 years, the reply was: "Sure jeez, there are lads who've done less for murder!" There were also praises for the RTÉ "special effects" team who managed to kill off Mitchell's character's wife in a "hurricane". Mitchell's performance on Charity You're A Star also came under some scrutiny.

Episode eight saw magician Paul Daniels and footballer Jason McAteer join Podge and Rodge. McAteer saw his moments of glory relived; his goal against Holland and his dream ad of Ireland winning the World Cup. When Jason asked why Podge and Rodge never blinked (it was freaking him out), the duo replied: "the nuns welded our eyes open". They then played a quiz called "Offside or Back of the Net" (which stood for true or false) when Jason's past blunders were recalled.

On episode ten, Paul Byrom was asked: "What's it like being Fair City's fanny magnet?" (Maurice the chef). Biker-cum-singer Suzi Quatro also made an appearance. There was much controversy following the "Gifted Or Afflicted" feature in which a "willy fiddler" was judged to have a "shocking affliction" by Podge and Rodge who said: "His willy looks like a finger!" (which in fact it was). However this did not stop a number of complaints by people who were fooled into thinking it was a vulgar piece.

Episode eleven was a Saint Patrick's Day special which featured a Ballydung pageant with Lucy on a float. "Ireland's Doctoress Doolittle" Éanna Ní Lamhna and "south Dublin on a stick" Ryan "Bryan" Tubridy visited Ballydung Manor. The duo succeeded in getting Tubridy to call himself a "knob", dig a large hole and took so much "piss" they were "in danger of being dehydrated for months". They mocked his sense of style telling him that he looked like a solicitor from "Tubridy, Tubridy & Felch". They wondered if he would be available to host The Late Late Show and said they were out of the running because Friday night was Spongebath Night. However their real intentions were just to free up Saturday night for a good film. Pat Kenny was yet again poked fun at with Podge and Rodge saying they would never invite him onto the show because he would have to read the autocue and prepare the answers to their questions in advance. In the end they bid farewell to Tubridy with: "Fair play t'ya for comin' on and takin' it like a man." They also discovered that the best anagram for Saint Patrick's Day was "SATANIC PARTY KIDS".

Episode fourteen saw V For Vendetta star Stephen Rea and television presenter ("the holiday fella") Craig Doyle visit Ballydung. Rea's past appearance as a surgeon on A Scare at Bedtime was shown. Lucy took to the streets to ask for the public's worst holiday destinations which featured Wexford Town (X2), Spain, Leitrim ("it's crap..." "it's pretty boring...") and O'Connell Street in Dublin. Doyle discussed his 28 holiday trips per year with the BBC as presenter of The Holiday Show, prompting queries as to whether he was a member of a certain club. Doyle however denied he was a a member of the mile-high club. He recalled his meeting with Cameron Diaz in Belize and footage was shown of him and her trapped in a a canoe unable to move anywhere in a river. His appearance on the cover of a lads magazine was also ridiculed.

Episode fifteen saw comedian Karl Spain and pop star Limahl grace Ballydung Manor. Spain spoke of his appearance on The Late Late Show on his 29th birthday and the show that propelled him into the big time, Karl Spain Wants A Woman. Podge and Rodge reminded him of when he "did a bit of a Wayne Rooney and went older" before showing a clip of his meeting of Aunty Margo, a woman of etiquette.

On March 28 2007, it was announced that Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley would be the guests for the next episode of The Podge and Rodge Show, to be broadcast on Monday April 2. This surprise appearance was to humourously discuss the new Northern Irish power-sharing agreement. However, it turned out to be some sort of joke. The guests officially listed for April 2 were Deirdre O'Kane & Joe O'Shea while Pauline McLynn and Paul Costelloe were booked for the April 3 show.

Episode sixteen guest Joe O'Shea was asked: "How the hell did you get a job beside one of Ireland's most wankable stars?" Podge and Rodge repeatedly mocked O'Shea's co-presenter Gráinne Seoige and her psychotic stares in his direction as he spoke. Also featured was "the Andrea Corr of the comedy world" and "the best thing to come out of Drogheda since Legionnaire's Disease." Deirdre O'Kane, who two months previously had presented the 2007 Meteor Awards with the two hosts. Indeed they said they had expected to never see her again. They "dragged up" a clip of "RTÉ's first comedy" although Deirdre was "in your bra, mind." They mentioned her appearance in Boy Eats Girl alongside Samantha Mumba whose "career is dead anyway." She also "had the unfortunate displeasure to have to Hang With Hector."

Episode seventeen saw "the surprisingly useful Miss" Pauline McLynn visit the Manor. She revealed that it was Ardal O'Hanlon who came up with the line: "Ride me sideways was another one" and that that particular scene of Father Ted was shot in one take, with Pauline laughing as Dermot Morgan pulled faces at her. "Fiery fashionista" and "the most stylishly fertile man in Ireland" Paul Costelloe also made an appearance with Podge and Rodge dressing up in their finest tweed for the occasion.
