[edit] In "Mean Girls"

In Mean Girls, The Plastics are a group of three (four with the inclusion of Cady) popular teenage girls at an American high school. Although they are supposedly hated by the majority of the students within the school, they are also compared to royalty as they have the power to do anything they wish.

In the film, The Plastics are regarded as mean and nasty, but also an elitist group whom even the teachers are afraid of.

[edit] In Today's Culture

In today's culture the term Plastics has been commonly used as an insult in referring to individuals whom others believe to be popular and unkind to others. Those branded as Plastic often possess several of the characteristics seen in the movie. They include: being rude, shunning others, being popular and craving attention.

The term Plastics was used by contestant Richard Newman in the seventh UK series of Big Brother in reference to the housemates he believed to be playing up to the cameras in order to win the show.

Although originally intended as an insult, some now accept being branded as Plastic and often find it complimenting.
