The Phantom of the Opera (1911 translation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's translation of the novel The Phantom of the Opera is heavily abridged, although the reader isn't informed of this. It also features some mistranslations; for example, "Je suis la Mort rouge qui passe!" (which literally means "I am the Red Death passing by!") is translated by Mattos as, "I am Red Death stalking abroad". Mattos translates the title, "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra", as "The Phantom of the Opera", but refers to the titutlar character as "Opera Ghost".
