"The Phantom Thief" (「怪盗サイレーン」 Kaitou Sairēn?, Phantom Theif Psiren) is episode 10 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2003-12-06.
After exposing Father Cornello in Lior as a fraud, Ed and Al are on their way back to report to Colonel Mustang about the incident. They stop at the town of Aquroya and are caught up in the manhunt for a talented cat burglar, Psiren, who uses her skills as an alchemist to make fools of the local police time and again. The Chief of Police hopes to fight fire with fire by using Ed to catch Psiren.
Three times Psiren tricks Ed and Al into thinking that she steals for the good of the people; saving certain buildings from being torn down. But each time, the building gets demolished anyway and Psiren gets away with it. Alphonse, still believing that Psiren is good, and that she is really a good person, tries to stop Ed from catching Psiren before she gets away with the loot. Finally in a last battle, Ed captures Psiren and hands her over to the police. But again, Psiren gets out and is so on, the Aquroya tourist attraction.
[edit] Trivia
- One of the buildings that is torn down appears to be a Christian church, when Psiren pretends to be a nun. However, it is stated later in the series that Christianity no longer exists in Amestris.
- Someone resembling Inspector Zenigata from the anime series Lupin III makes somewhat of a cameo in this episode, when a man wearing Zenigata's clothes and even sporting his signature eyebrows shows up and immediately handcuffs Ed in the usual Zenigata fashion.
- We find that Ed has a phobia of needles when the doctor gives him an injection for his food poisoning.
- Ed is shown cheating at cards, during the train ride at the beginning of the episode. The cards shown in his hand are different then the royal flush he played after Al doubled the bet. Al also commented on the fact that Ed had won every game.
