"Perfect Castaway" is an episode from the fourth season of the FOX animated series Family Guy. The episode was scheduled to air on September 11, 2005, but was pushed back a week due to Hurricane Katrina (because the episode references a hurricane). The title of the episode is a parody of two movies, The Perfect Storm and Cast Away, while the storyline lampoons both movies.

[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Peter Griffin went in search of fish at Pelican's Reef at the suggestion of salty Seamus, with Glen Quagmire, Joe Swanson, and Cleveland Brown tagging along for the free beer, only to find themselves adrift at sea after a hurricane. They would have been killed, but for the raft they were able to build out of Quagmire's sex dolls. Unfortunately, they had no food, so Peter ate the legs of Joe, a paraplegic, from the knees on down.

After being presumed lost at sea, a memorial service was held for the sailors, and Brian married Lois to support the family, working as a salesman at a Hummer dealership. However, he and Lois slept in separate beds, much to Brian's frustration.

Several months later, the four men were rescued from the island by a passing cruise ship, while they were attempting to pass the time with group homosexual intercourse.

Joe gets a new set of legs from a death row inmate who got the electric chair. Unfortunately for Joe, he was also a paraplegic, a reference to the show's uncanny ability to return to the status quo regardless of events.

Peter finally returns home and meets his family. When Peter is about to kiss Lois, she admits that she has married Brian. After Lois tells him why she is with Brian, Peter leaves and gets a room in a hotel in Downtown Quahog. Brian wants to talk to her about the situation she is in (in order to get into her pants). In a attempt to win Lois back, Peter goes to the house where Lois would find him naked and lying on the couch. His plan succeeds and they have sex on the tipped over chair where Stewie finds them and videotapes them having sex. The next night, Lois runs out of the house with a saddle. Stewie shows the tape to Brian and Brian goes to the hotel that Peter is staying at and sees a silhouette of Peter and Lois having sex. When Brian gets to Peter's room, Lois tells Peter that she made a commitment to Brian and must stay with him. When Lois gets home, Brian dumps Lois and tells her to go back to Peter. The next day, she admits that she was a day away from having sex with him.

[edit] Cultural references

  • Lois and Brian watch Gilmore Girls, in a scene in which the mother and daughter talk very fast – a reference to the manner in which dialogue is spoken in the show, often fast-paced and laden with pop references. Lorelai and Rory share an incestous lesbian kiss in this scene, possibly an oblique reference to Lorelai jokingly suggesting that during her parents' wedding re-enactment she would get drunk and make out with the best man, which would be "awkward", as it was Rory. Rory also enjoyed a brief lesbian kiss from Paris during spring break (who then demanded her performance be critiqued).
  • Seth MacFarlane has appeared as a guest-star on Gilmore Girls. (Alex Borstein's husband, Jackson Douglas, plays a semi-main role on the show, and Borstein herself has appeared as two separate guest characters.)
  • The scene where Peter tried to catch fish was a parody of one similar scene in the movie Cast Away.
  • During one flashback scene, Peter recalls a farting contest he had in a (supposedly public) bathroom with Michael Moore. While the farts start off normal, they eventually break into the tune of "Dueling Banjos" from the movie Deliverance.
  • Peter recalls trying going back to the past by driving a De Lorean through a wall. This is an obvious reference to Back to the Future, including a Wilhelm Scream.
  • Peter misses Captain Caveman, a Hanna-Barbera cartoon character from the late 1970s. He keeps a picture of Captain Caveman in a pocket watch, just as Tom Hanks's character kept a picture of Helen Hunt's character in Cast Away.
  • After getting back to Quahog, Peter and the gang mention they had fun on the cruise shooting skeet. After that is said, two hospital workers are seen carrying out Skeet Ulrich, who was shot by Cleveland.
  • When Peter's boat goes into the storm, they go up a wave at a 90 degree angle, which is from The Perfect Storm
  • Lois mentions that Meg went on a date with the announcer from Super Friends.
  • Herbert the creepy old pedophile hums "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin when he asks Brian if the car dealership had an ice cream truck.
  • When Brian sees the silhouettes of Lois and Peter in the hotel window, he also sees Alfred Hitchcock who appeared in such a manner on his TV show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
  • Peter recalls being on a fictitious game show entitled "Bobcat or Björk?" in which he was to guess whether or not he was listening to a sound clip of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait or Icelandic musical artist Björk. He immediately guesses "Bobcat Goldthwait" upon hearing the clip, but is told that he was actually listening to a clip of Björk.
  • During a game of I Never, Quagmire drinks to having sex with a woman while the lights were on, having sex with Cleveland's wife, having sex with a woman in a Logan Airport bathroom, giving a reach around to a spider monkey while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and performing erotic asphyxiation with an illegal alien from Home Depot then doing the same thing with someone from Jo-Ann Fabrics.
  • Stewie showed Brian a video of Lois and Peter having sex. When Peter reaches sexual climax, Peter screams "Shazam!", a reference to the superhero Captain Marvel who said "shazam!" to activate his powers.
  • While Kobe Bryant is being interrogated for his suspected rape of Katelyn Faber, he spins a basketball on his finger, distracting the guards.
  • Peter's ancestor Ponce de Leon Griffin discovers The Fountain of Youth.
  • Peter plans on making a Christmas album, a faux ad is shown with Peter singing gibberish and made up lyrics to Sleigh Ride, The Little Drummer Boy, and Carol of the Bells.
  • The scene where Peter sprays whipped cream from an aerosol can all over his chest and privates to seduce Lois is similar to a scene from the movie "Varsity Blues".
  • When Stewie goes upstairs but stops at the top to watch Lois and Brian break up he pulls out a box of Milk Duds.

[edit] Trivia

  • Weatherman Ollie Willliams requests Chunky Soup, but on the DVD, it is captioned as "Turkey" instead of Chunky
