The Other Press

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Other Press is the student newspaper of Douglas College, a community college in New Westminster, BC (near Vancouver). It has been in print since 1976. Originally named The Press, it is one of the most popular student newspapers in Canada, having a wide readership on the Canadian University Press (CUP) website. It is also one of British Columbia's oldest student publications. College newspapers are frequently training facilities for journalism majors, overseen by faculty members; Douglas College, however, has no journalism department and the Other Press is solely and wholly run by students (plus whichever community members wish to participate); consequently, this newspaper's writing and editing can vary a great deal in quality.

Since 1978 The Other Press has been formally published through the Other Publications Society, an independent publishing group whose only function is to publish the Other Press; attempts to create other publications, such as the Otherthan, have failed.

Award-winning journalist Terry Glavin was a founding member of the Other Press; he was its editor in 1976.
