[edit] Overview
The Original Zings of Comedy is a weekly comedy show that combines standup comedy with character-based improv/sketch comedy. The show also incorporates a live band. The show is hosted by comedians Nat Towsen and Pat Boccuzzi. The show is part of ImprovBoston's Thursday night lineup, occurring every week at 8PM.
[edit] History
The first Original Zings of Comedy took place on Thursday, April 5, 2007. It featured standup from comedians Taylor Connelly, Myq Kaplan, Dan Sally, and the first-ever beginner Kurt Krober. It also featured a set from Nat Towsen, who performed his jokes to music, and Pat Boccuzzi, who performed a set of entirely new material. The show also featured the theatre premier of the epic music video, The Turbo Tax Turbo Rap Turbo Video. [1]
[edit] Show Format
The show is essentially structured a standup review with a house band. From this setup, characters, sketches, and improv are incorporated as if they are a part of reality. The standup comedians are give longer sets than the average club set (something along the lines of 10-12 minutes rather than 5-7). In addition, there are also a series of specialty sets. For example, every show features a 5-minute set from a person who has never performed standup before. There is also a set in which a more established comedian tells entirely new material, and the audience is encouraged to react vocally and raucously.
