[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ross's ex-wife Carol visits him at the museum and tells him that she is pregnant. Ross goes to the sonogram along with Carol's lesbian life partner Susan. They disagree over names - especially the last name. Ross thinks that since he's the father, the baby should have his last name. Carol wants the baby's surname to be Willick, and Susan wants her last name (Bunch) thrown into the mix as well. The fighting temporarily ceases when they all spot the baby on the sonogram.

Monica feels stressed when her parents come over for dinner, because she feels they favor Ross. "He's the Prince," she explains to her friends. "Apparently, they had some big ceremony before I was born." She gets even more upset when Rachel, who is planning to return her engagement ring to Barry, loses the ring in the lasagna she was planning to serve.

Jack and Judy come to dinner, where Ross reveals the reason behind his divorce, and that Carol is pregnant. Jack and Judy get very upset - at Monica, for not telling them.

Rachel goes to Barry's office to return the ring - where he reveals that he went on what was supposed to have been their honeymoon with Mindy Hunter, who was Rachel's maid of honor. Rachel later calls Mindy and curses Mindy/Barry's future children with "his old hair line and her old nose."

At the end, everyone watches the sonogram. Phoebe thinks the baby looks like an old potato, Monica cries because she realises she's going to be an aunt, Joey can't decide what he's supposed to be looking at, and Chandler thinks it's about to attack the Enterprise.

[edit] Trivia

  • In this episode, Carol is played by Anita Barone. For the rest of her appearances, she is played by Jane Sibbett. Barone took the role, and filmed this episode before learning she would only be a recurring cast member rather than a permanent one, and quit. Sibbett took over the role after Barone's departure.
  • This is the first episode to feature Jack Geller and Judy Geller. They and Gunther and Janice are the only non-Friends who were in all 10 seasons.
  • There is a major inconsistancy with the surroundings on how Carol is pregnant with Ross' child after The One With The Flashback. Before this episode, it would have been assumed that Carol and Ross conceived before they separated. However, the flashback claims that Ross and Carol separated in 1993, which means that Carol and Ross must have gotten together after they separated in order for Carol to be pregnant with Ross' Child.
