Phoebe's cop boyfriend, Gary, invites Ross, Joey, and Chandler on a ride-along, even after Chandler expresses some concern about the ride-along being at night. Ross starts bragging that he is Gary's partner because he is in the front seat, but gets demoted to the back seat after nearly blowing Gary's undercover status. Without warning, there is a noise like a gun shot, and Joey jumps to his right as if to protect Ross. They soon find out that the noise was a car backfiring. Chandler is jealous that Joey saved Ross instead of him, but Joey confesses that he was trying to save his sandwich instead (he brought a sandwich eariler that he really liked but Gary would not let him eat it in his car).

Before going on the ride-along, Ross was depressed that his ex-wife Emily was getting remarried. When Rachel goes over to Ross's apartment to get a blender for margaritas, she overhears a message from Emily asking Ross to call her. Rachel calls over Monica to listen to the message, and Monica suggests deleting the message because she thinks Ross would do something dumb like interrupt the wedding. When Rachel tries to playback the message to see if Emily was being genuine, she accidentally deletes the message. After Ross returns from his "near-death" experience, Rachel decides to tell him that Emily called. Ross, committed to seizing every opportunity after nearly dying, plans to call Emily, but Rachel talks him out of it.
