"The One with the Race Car Bed" is the seventh episode of season three of the television situation comedy Friends.
First aired: November 7, 1996
[edit] Plot
The gang sees a commercial for the Mattress King, the bed store owned by Janice's soon-to-be ex-husband. Seems the Mattress King is using their divorce to help sell his mattresses. The prices are so low, Monica can't resist the sale and decides to buy a mattress from the store. Monica isn't home when the bed is delivered, so Phoebe signs for it - but instead of the bed Monica ordered, they deliver a child's racecar bed.
Meanwhile, Joey gets a job teaching a community education class - "Acting for Soap Operas." He's glad to teach his students some of his "tricks of the trade" - looking evil by pretending to have a fishhook in your eyebrow, looking confused by doing long division in your head, etc. While teaching, he gets an audition to play a boxer on All My Children - and finds out that one of his students is also up for the part. When the student asks Joey for advice, Joey tries to fix the audition by telling him to play the boxer gay. Unfortunately for Joey, this backfires - the producers loved what the student did with the role, and awarded it to him instead.
In order to get her father to like Ross, Rachel arranges for the three of them to have dinner. The dinner is disastrous - Ross can't seem to make a good impression, and makes matters worse when he tries to leave their waiter a decent tip. The next morning, he tries to make things right over brunch, where he and Dr. Green finally find something to talk about - namely, some of Rachel's bad choices.
Joey and Monica go to the Mattress King showroom to return the racecar bed. Since "Monica" signed for the bed, the store won't take it back. Joey demands to speak to the Mattress King himself - but when he starts to storm into his office, he sees the King kissing Janice.
