"The One With the List" is the eighth episode of season two of the television sitcom Friends.

First aired: November 16, 1995

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the teaser, Rachel tells the girls about kissing Ross for the first time, describing it in very romantic terms; meanwhile, Ross tells the guys that he got some tongue. The next day at Central Perk, Ross talks to Joey, Chandler, Phoebe, and Monica about his conflicting feelings for both Julie, his current girlfriend, and Rachel, his long-time love. First Rachel shows up, then Julie does. Phoebe then sings a song she makes up on the spot about a love-triangle between three 'fictional people', called 'Two of Them Kissed Last Night'. Ross realises he must choose between the two, but has problems figuring it out. Chandler suggests making a pros and cons list for each, which he types into his new laptop. The cons for Rachel include being a little spoiled, having 'chubby ankles' and being 'just a waitress.' Julie's only con, on the other hand, is that 'she's not Rachel'... Which is enough to decide the issue. Ross breaks up with Julie. Unfortunately, Rachel discovers The List. Due to a typo by Chandler, it reads 'She's not Rachem'. Thinking that 'Rachem' is an archaeological term, she gets insulted and refuses to talk to him.

Monica is looking for a job, and ends up working for Mr. Rastatter, who has a new product called 'Mockolate', a completely synthetic (and horrible tasting) chocolate. She is to come up with Thanksgiving-themed recipes for Mockolate. When she presents the dishes she came up with (which have very little Mockolate in them) to Mr. Rastatter, he tells her that the product was turned down for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, and makes sure she hasn't eaten a lot of it.

Ross tries to make up with Rachel by making an extensive 'pros' list for her, but she refuses to listen to him. He later dedicates a song on the radio to her, but she calls the radio station and tells the DJ what Ross did. The DJ breaks into the song to tell Ross what he did was horrible and she doesn't want to play his song anymore.

[edit] Trivia

  • The song Ross dedicates to Rachel is "With or Without You" by U2.
  • The subplot involving Monica developing Thanksgiving recipes for Mockolate was added when NBC required all shows airing that evening to have a Thanksgiving theme.
  • The story Chandler makes up to throw off Rachel reads as follows:
"It was summer, and it was hot. Rachel was there. A lonely gray couch. 'Oh look,' cried Ned, and then the kingdom was his forever. The end."
  • Chandler boasts that his new laptop has 12 megabytes of RAM, a 500 megabyte hard drive, and a 28,000 bps modem. He then announces his intention to use it to play computer games.
