[edit] Plot
Carol, Ross's ex-wife, and her lesbian life partner, Susan, have big news for Ross: They're getting married. "As in, I now pronounce you wife and wife married?" a distraught Ross asks. Carol and Susan invite him to the wedding, but he refuses to go.
After their original caterer is injured in a mountain biking accident, the happy couple asks Monica to cater the wedding. Of course, she recruits all her friends to help, and becomes a bit abusive. Chandler at one point suggests she come with German subtitles. While making the food for the wedding, Carol comes in and announces the wedding is off - her parents refuse to come to the wedding, and Carol didn't want to get married without her parents there. Ross makes her see that they're not doing it for their parents, they're doing it because they love each other. She agrees, and the wedding is back on.
Joey makes his first appearance on Days of Our Lives as Dr. Drake Ramoray, much to the delight of the rest of the gang. The also tells them how one of his co-stars taught him the "smell-the-fart" acting - a way to take deep pause when you want to recollect your lines.
One of Phoebe's massage clients, Rose Adelman, dies on the table while Phoebe is massaging her. Rose's spirit doesn't get very far, however - it gets stuck in Phoebe. She wanted to see everything, so Phoebe takes her all over the city - but her spirit is still stuck in there.
Meanwhile, Rachel's mother, Sandra, comes to visit her daughter and drops a bombshell: She's divorcing Rachel's father. Sandra was impressed with Rachel's newfound independence and wanted that for herself. Rachel doesn't take well to both pieces of news.
The wedding continues as planned - Ross, in fact, does attend. He gives Carol away at the altar, and even dances with Susan at the reception. When Carol and Susan kiss, Phoebe exclaims, "Now I've seen everything!", at which point Rose's spirit leaves her. Chandler and Joey try unsuccessfully to hit on some of the wedding guests - "Penis schmenis, we're all people," Chandler tells one.
At the end of the episode the gang discusses who they think will be the last to get married - and somehow decide it will be Chandler. Chandler retorts back saying "Isn't Ben in this?"
[edit] Trivia
- When Sandra says the reason she's leaving her husband is to be more like Rachel, Rachel makes the remark: "Couldn't she have copied my hairstyle?" This is a nod to the "Rachel," the layered haircut popularized by Jennifer Aniston.
- The last to be married is eventually Joey. As said here Phoebe and Ross both have. Rachel marries Ross in a drunken night in The One in Vegas, Part Two. Chandler and Monica marry each other in The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding, Part 2.
[edit] Quotes
- Monica: God, this is so hard. I can't decide between lamb and duck.
Chandler: Well, of course lambs are scarier. Otherwise, the movie would have been called 'Silence of the Ducks'
- Joey: It just seems so futile, you know ? All these women, and nothing. I feel like Superman without my powers, you know? I have the cape, and yet I cannot fly.
Chandler: Well now you understand how I feel every single day, ok? The world is my lesbian wedding.
- Sandra (looking out the window): Oh my god! There's an unattractive nude man playing the cello.
